Popular VR game SUPERHOT is getting a sequel of sorts. The game, currently being referred to as SUPERHOT JP, promises the same time-pausing, bullet-dodging action as the original. Only now, the action takes place in SUPERHOT’s version of Japan.

The game’s website gives all the necessary details, featuring Japanese descriptions before the Engilsh ones to emphasize the importance of the setting. A Japanese development team is working on it alongside the original developers, and the game will release in Japan first for PC and PS4. Basically, the Japan part is really important. As for what exactly the gameplay will take from Japan, the website promises hot springs, samurai castles, bullet trains, and more.

SUPERHOT JP (again the website insists it’s a working title) will not be in virtual reality. It’s not even technically a sequel. The website calls it “an alternate story campaign with a bunch of new levels and some cool new gameplay rather than a full-fledged sequel.” Another amusing repeated claim is that the game is set in “the SUPEROT universe.” So SUPERHOT is developing a shared universe now? Be on the lookout for the inevitable Thanos DLC.

Speaking of DLC, the website makes it a point to say that, despite not being a sequel, SUPERHOT JP is not DLC either. It’s a standalone thing with “about 15-18 regular levels and 3-4 endless levels, a few new weapons, and the same game modes as the original SUPERHOT.” A bow and arrow are teased, as well as see-through shoji screens.

With all that said, there’s no mention of a potential release date or price. Seeing as the game hasn’t even received a real title, it’s probably still a ways off. If it’s at least half as fun as the original SUPERHOT, it will be worth the wait. Just the potential to cut bullets in half with a samurai sword will no doubt be worth the price of admission for some. However, that would be a heck of a lot more fun in VR. With no release set, developer GameTomo has the time to make VR samurai swords happen. Let’s hope they take it.
