Nintendo has reportedly scrapped the Switch Pro and no longer plans on releasing a more powerful version of the Switch, likely to put all of its focus on a next-generation console.

For as long as the Nintendo Switch has been around, there have been rumours of a mid-generation upgrade equivalent to the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, with most taking to calling it the Switch Pro. These rumours have only gotten more prevalent the older the Switch has got and the more necessary an upgrade has become, but it seems like one of the longest-standing rumours can finally be put to rest.

This report comes courtesy of Digital Foundry, who recently took part in a Q&A where they answered questions from viewers. One question asks the team whether they think that we'll see a successor to the Switch in 2023, which leads to some discussion on the long-rumoured Switch Pro and what's next for Nintendo.

According to John Lineman, the Switch Pro was once a real thing in development at Nintendo, but work on it has now been scrapped, and it seems unlikely that Nintendo will release a mid-generation upgrade at all. Lineman then goes on to say that more than one developer has confirmed these plans to Digital Foundry in the past.

Lineman said, "At one point internally, from what I can understand from talking to different developers, is that there was some sort of mid-generation Switch update planned at one point, and that seems to be no longer happening and thus it's pretty clear that what they do next is going to be the actual next-generation hardware. I don't think it's going to be 2023."

Digital Foundry also speculates that Nintendo is nervous about the transition from the Switch to its next console, which makes sense considering how big of a success it has been for them and how it's had its fair share of failed consoles over the years like the GameCube and Wii U.
