Sylveon's only been in Pokemon Unite for two days, and it's already getting a nerf.

Almost immediately after its launch, the community reported that Sylveon is way, way too overpowered. Its Hyper Voice ability in particular has been causing big problems, as it is an uninterruptable cone of high damage. Combined with Calm Mind, Sylveon has become one of the game's most powerful hard carries (a character who starts slow before becoming an unstoppable force later on).

In a tweet from the official Pokemon Unite account, it was announced that a balance patch would be coming today (October 8) to nerf Sylveon. Both Hyper Voice and Mystical Fire are having their damage reduced, hopefully scaling back both of the two major builds for Sylveon which either use Hyper Voice and Calm Mind to blitz an enemy with ridiculously high damage, or Mystical Fires and Draining Kiss to constantly drain life and keep Sylveon a threat.

Since Sylveon launched in Unite, the metagame has been upended drastically. In a Reddit ranking of the top 100 played Pokemon amongst the top 100 players, Sylveon has shot up in to third place, knocking down previous mainstay Venusaur. Though Lucario and Eldegoss are still in the top spots, having a new Pokemon come in and shake things up so much isn't healthy in the long-term for the game. In comparison, previous newcomer Mamoswine has found a comfortable spot at the bottom of the tier list, being a well-balanced Pokemon, if a bit on the weak side.

The introduction of Sylveon has also caused some concern about whether we'll ever see any of the popular Eeveelution line introduced. In Unite, Pokemon begin in their unevolved forms before evolving as they level up. The problem with Sylveon is it evolves from Eevee, meaning any further Eeveelutions added will just cause confusion as to which Eevee will later evolve into which Pokemon. Thanks to the game's Holowear cosmetics, it isn't a problem that is completely unsurpassable, but one we're not likely to see fixed any time soon.

Regardless, Pokemon Unite has been a massive success since launch, particularly on mobile where it hit 30 million downloads in only seven days, storming past League of Legends: Wild Rift and Brawl Stars. It's currently positioned to overtake the current leader in the mobile-moba space, Honor of Kings.
