System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition will bring a remastered version of the game to take advantage of modern hardware.

There are a few games that have come to define the survival horror genre. Resident Evil is one; Silent Hill is another; but perhaps the greatest of the survival horror games is none other than the Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios classic, System Shock 2.

In System Shock 2, you play as a soldier recently woken up from cryo status aboard a ship in the year 2114. The ship has been taken over by some sort of infection that has either turned the crew into mindless mutants or killed them, while the ship's robots are all going haywire.

Eventually, the homicidal AI from the first System Shock shows up to admit that it was all her fault and you need to kill the infection to save the day.

Upon its release way back in 1999, System Shock 2 won no less than 7 Game of the Year awards from various publications and cemented itself as a landmark game for the survival horror genre.

And now it’s getting remastered by the same folks who did the original System Shock and Turok remasters.

Nightdive Studios, a developer that has made it their specialty to take old classics and give them a new life, announced System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition on their Twitter account last weekend. Much like the Enhanced Edition on the first System Shock, System Shock 2 will get new graphical improvements, widescreen and 4K support, and many bug fixes that were never squashed in the original.

Speaking to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Stephen Kick of Nightdive said that special emphasis is being made on creating a co-op multiplayer experience while they port the game over to their proprietary KEX Engine from the original Dark Engine. No release date has been set as they only just got the source code, but here’s hoping it’s sooner rather than later.

Also keep in mind that Nightdive is remaking (that’s remaking, not remastering) the original System Shock to be a modern AAA title. That’s due out sometime in 2020.
