Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick claims to be encouraged by fans' calls for GTA remasters but says he's leaving the decision to developers Rockstar.
The former is responsible for publishing GTA 5, which has been wildly successful and has shown no signs of slowing down. The game has sold over 140 million units, selling more in 2020 than any other year save its release year, 2013. The likes of GTA 4 and GTA: San Andreas have been the subject of remaster desires and a recent online survey determined San Andreas, released in 2004, is the game fans want to see remade more than any other game ever published.
Speaking during an earnings call on Monday night, Zelnick was asked for his take on the possibility of remastering the aforementioned classics. "It seems like there is a huge audience of people that have probably never played GTA 4 or any of these other prior GTA games that came up before that," analyst Eric Handler asserted (H/T The Motley Fool) before asking, "what's your perspective there in terms of thinking about remastering prior games?"
The CEO said the question was "great and encouraging" but he was keener on leaving it as more of a statement than a question. "Any updates on our release schedule will come from Rockstar Games," he added.
Of course, the above doesn't speak to any intentions, nor does it confirms plans for any GTA remakes, yet it's still encouraging as Zelnick did not state that Rockstar isn't working on bringing some of the classic GTA titles back.
Also quite encouragingly, it's been rumored that the devs are working on a remaster of the original Red Dead Redemption that released in 2010. On the flip side, it could be coming up before the very highly anticipated GTA 6.
A recent leak suggests GTA 6 will launched in 2023 and Rockstar could be hard at work on that front. That hardly rules out other teams working on remasters, however.
