The Tales series spans several decades and has made a name for itself through the way you interact with its characters. While you and your companions are focused on saving the world (or even worlds), some of the best parts of getting to know your team are the small conversations about favorite foods, or pastimes that may or may not involve 'acquiring' a bottle of drink.

Each character you add to your party has a different amount of character development and chances to connect with you than others. Along with sometimes conflicting personalities, it's a fun way to check out the team's current dynamic in the story. Or sometimes you just want to skip Teepo's scenes. Won't judge you there.

10 Rowan - Tales Of Xillia 1 And 2

Rowan Tales Of Xillia looks over his left shoulder

A master of both music and mystic artes, Rowan is a former military strategist and was known as The Conductor due to his strategic mastery. That all changed once he lost his loved one, Carrie. Not long after, he became a butler for the Sharil family, including the Lord and Governor of Sharliton.

His main weapon is a rapier, but he keeps a few daggers hidden away for when he's a long distance away from his target. While he is the oldest member of your team, he does not let his age interfere with either his calm demeanor in difficult situations or his sense of humor, which he employs to keep the party in good spirits as they take on one of their enemies.

9 Magilou - Tales Of Berseria

Magilou Tales of Berseria giving good side profile

Magilou is a mystery. She doesn't always mean what she says, and she's a known instigator of both friends and foes. However, beneath the surprising depth of her comedic shield is a woman seeking retaliation from a mentor who abandoned her, as well as other ulterior motives she refuses to speak on.

Magi has quite the arsenal to work with as a so-called witch. She is skilled in fire and water arts, and her main weapon consists of magical paper dolls that she controls.

8 Eizen - Tales Of Berseria

Eizen Tales of Berseria talks to the men on his ship

You need all the luck you can get as a pirate. Finding spoils and riches beyond your wildest dreams would be nearly impossible without it. Storms would threaten your pirate journey whenever they could. Still, the only thing you can do is keep moving forward, right?

Eizen is the literal embodiment of misfortune. Everywhere he goes, bad things happen to him and anyone with whom he travels. His crew, on the other hand, is unconcerned, because they are always prepared for anything, and some things are more important than luck.

Eizen fights with his fists, refusing to push his already bad luck with anything that could break in a fight. As an older Malak, he commands mastery over wind and earth.

7 Dohalim - Tales of Arise

Dohalim Tales of Arise attacks the party after getting upset

Dohalim, Lord of Elde Menencia and purveyor of music and the arts, wished to pursue his passions in peace. Unfortunately, it was not to be, as he was forced to compete in the Crown Contest, a tournament to determine who would be the next lord of each of the five lands. He triumphed, but at the expense of his friends' lives. Ever since, the guilt of winning and what happened gnawed at him. His first act as lord was to abolish slavery and make Renan and Dahnans equal in his realm.

Dohalim's preferred weapon is a polearm, which makes him formidable at close and mid-range combat, as well as aerial attacks. He has a wide range of astral arts to experiment with, from stone and wind magic to healing and full-fledged resurrection. He is a true jack of all trades who excels at combat.

6 Repede - Tales Of Vesperia

Repede Tales of Vesperia attacking like a good boy

When you have a good boy on your team, he deserves to be on the list. Repede fights with the speed and agility of a powerful dog, and his primary weapon is a dagger. He was a good boy, I told you.

Don't let the cuddly fur fool you, this doggo has been through some things. He lost both his former owner and his father Lambert, who had sadly been possessed by a demon. Still, he's found a true companion in protagonist Yuri, and he is willing to throw down and protect him at all costs.

5 Jade Curtiss - Tales Of The Abyss

Jade Curtiss Tales of The Abyss showing off his gameplay

The sharp-tongued necromancer uses sarcasm just as well as he uses his spear in battle. Anything and everyone is up for teasing, especially when something goes wrong. It's all a shield, however, to hide his deep feelings of regret for the things he's dons and the people he's murdered in his past, for both fun and science.

Jade was able to grow out of his callousness, but it wasn't enough to keep him from his current life's work of fomicry, which involves creating duplicates of objects.

4 Roukrou Rangetsu - Tales Of Berseria

Rokurou Tales Of Berseria giving a sweet smile

You first find this carefree demon chilling inside Titania prison, biding his time until he's able to get back his 'family sword' from storage. When he meets the protagonist Velvet, she tells him where she's seen it, and from that point on he agrees to follow her in her quest for revenge.

He has his reasons to travel, though: he is looking to prove to his older brother that he's finally the stronger one of the two. He was humiliated by his brother Ichiro Rangetsu, after being sent to kill him.

Aside from the dual blades he wields (neither of which was the missing blade, mind you), he utilizes non-elemental magical attacks that can be difficult to use in crowds of enemies. Doubly so if they happen to be resistant to non-elemental attacks, which happens surprisingly often. Still, putting some time into learning his timing and functionality of attacks will have you making wild combinations.

3 Raine Sage - Tales of Symphonia

Raine Sage Tales of Symhphonia talking to protagonist

Nurturing and warm Raine Sage has had a lot of practice taking care of family. She raised her brother when she herself was a child of only eleven years old, as they face discrimination on account of being half-elves. Raine uses this as motivation to try and make a better life for other half-elves like her.

Raine is a skilled healer who wields a staff and has a strong elemental defense that shields her from magic. Outside of battle, she is the group's pragmatist, frequently considering the long-term consequences of whatever situation Floyd and the gang find themselves in.

2 Guy Cecil - Tales Of The Abyss

Guy Cecil Tales Of The Abyss gets attacked by a girl

At first glance, Guy seems like a polite, confident young man whose best friends with his charge, Luke. Afraid of the opposite sex, his story is a journey of truth and acceptance that ends up with Guy getting over his fear by finding out who murdered his family.

Guy fights with his sheath in his offhand and frequently attacks from the draw, making his attacks lightning-fast. His artes are based on fire, and the first one you can use is called Rising Pheonix. He is combat-ready and raring to go at a moment's notice, as long as there are no girls around.

1 Kratos Aurion - Tales Of Symphonia

Kratos Tales Of Symphonia getting ready to attack the party

Through training, Kratos sought to teach Floyd how to better his sword work and grit through battles. With that history in mind, it comes as a shock when he holds secrets from your party that can change his relationship to his allies for the rest of the game.

Kratos fights with swords and daggers, but thanks to the gag weapons available, he also gets to wield some less serious weapons, such as the push broom or the exciting baseball bat. His speed in combat, as well as his ability to heal and keep the party healthy, make him a valuable ally to have on the field.
