In unexpected turn of events, Team Fortress 2 has made it back into the newsworthy territory, despite it being released all the way back in 2007. Not only that, but Valve has other games—including Dota, Half-Life, and Counter-Strike—that are became significantly more popular. Yet, all these years later, we are now seeing that Team Fortress 2 just hit its largest number of concurrent players on Steam of all time. Kudos to those that are continuing to make this game better.

Team Fortress 2 is a multiplayer first-person shooter game, and it’s available on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. As of Friday, Steam reported that the game had 151,253 concurrent players, which is a record high after the last 147,360 in December.

What makes Team Fortress 2 so successful is that it’s still receiving constant updates, despite its age. The most recent update came on June 22 this year. Some of the major changes include:

  • A cooldown before a player can create a vote when they join a match already in-progress
  • An update to the player list in the vote-kick dialog to show the time each player has been connected to the server
  • A removal of the disconnect reason from the message when players leave the server

These are only a few of the updates, but you can check out the full list on Team Fortress’s site here. Team Fortress 2 has been having an ongoing problem with bots, and this update should help tackle the problem. Previously, it had gotten so bad that the bots were even including racial slurs, offering to sell bots (or bot immunity), and posting links to alleged child pornography. We will be more than happy to see this stuff removed from the game.

With the recent update followed by the increase of players, it seems this is already heading in a positive direction. If anything, this all goes to show that a company being dedicated to their older games can, in fact, pay off.
