The Walking Dead franchise is known for its stellar storytelling and unique characters. Each character has an individualized personality and uniqueness that makes them stand out amongst the rather bland characters that tend to dominate other mainstream games.

Unfortunately, not every character in this universe can live forever. The show has seen many gruesome deaths that have horrified viewers and the games are no exception. Get ready to let the tears flow as we remember the most heartbreaking of deaths in Telltale's The Walking Dead series. This should go without saying but this article contains major spoilers for the whole series.

10 Larry

Larry's death is not only shocking, but truly gut-wrenching. Sure, he was an old grouch and not very kind to anyone aside from Lilly, but he had his reasons for being so cold. He was only trying to protect his daughter and look out for her well being as well.

The way he went out is also quite disturbing to watch as he has a heart attack and then his head was smashed by a salt lick block. He didn't deserve to die the way that he did. He was a good man at heart.

9 Sam

Sam's death comes as a shock. Few expected it when he jumps on Clementine and bites her to get some food she had in her hand. Clementine throws Sam off and this causes him to land on a metal spike, whimpering in pain.

The sounds of a dog in pain are heart wrenching enough but Clementine does what had to be done and puts Sam out of his misery. You can't blame him for being hungry in a world with hardly any food or humans to look after him.

8 Luke

Luke was one of the only people that was initially nice to Clementine in The Walking Dead: Season Two. He seemed like the kind of guy who was going to make it to the end of the season at least.

During the fourth episode of the season, the group tries to cross a lake that was frozen over. As Luke was crossing, the ice began to break beneath him. Despite your choices, you can't save him from this unfortunate accident.

7 Mariana

Mariana's death is so unexpected that players likely stared in shock for quite some time afterward. She had just gotten batteries to be able to listen to her music and she was very happy about you finding them for her.

All of a sudden she takes a bullet through the back of the head. Mariana was such a pure soul and didn't deserve this horrific fate at such a young age.

6 Carley

Carley becomes a potential love interest for Lee in the first season of The Walking Dead. During a confrontation with Lilly outside of the RV on the ride of the road, Carley stands up to her and Lilly pulls out her gun and shoots Carley in the head out of frustration.

This death is just as unexpected as Mariana's. The anger and sadness running through the player when this happens unexplainable. She just shot her in cold blood. Lilly deserved whatever fate she got after that.

5 Omid

At the very beginning of The Walking Dead: Season Two, Clementine is cleaning herself up in the restroom when a stranger walks in and finds her, holding her at gunpoint. Hearing the commotion, Omid slowly walks in to assess the situation and inches closer to grab the stranger.

However, the door behind Omid closes rather loudly, startling the stranger enough to where she accidentally shoots Omid in the chest. This death is a heartbreaking way to start the season and completely unpreventable. Omid was a good guy and his death is very unfortunate.

4 Duck

Duck's death signified the beginning of the end. Duck was bitten and his family had to deal with that so his mom, Katjaa, took him to the woods saying goodbye in private. A gunshot goes off and Lee and Kenny race to the scene and find a lifeless Katjaa laying beside a slowly dying Duck.

The player can then have Kenny shoot Duck or do it themselves, but who would make a father do that to their son, especially right after the mother shot herself? This scene is heartbreaking to watch as you realize everything Kenny had is now gone.

3 Ben

Ben didn't deserve to die. If he's still alive in episode 5, you see him try to jump across from a railing to another roof top. The railing snaps beneath his feet and he falls quite a distance to an alleyway, which is starting to draw in nearby walkers. Kenny and Lee go down to help but Ben was impaled by a spike and can't move.

Ben's only final wish was that he didn't want to become a walker, so Kenny gave him his wish with his last bullet before the walkers closed in on them. Ben didn't deserve this fate, and even Kenny was remorseful despite blaming him for his family's death. Ben was just another kid doing what he thought was right.

2 Kenny

After losing everything in the first season, Kenny is reunited with Clementine in The Walking Dead: Season Two. His death in this season is far more devastating than the ridiculous flashback scene in A New Frontier. There's an altercation between Kenny and Jane in which Jane pretends to have killed the baby, AJ.

Kenny attempts to kill Jane because of this and he'll succeed if the player doesn't stop him. The player has a choice to let Kenny stab Jane or to shoot Kenny. This will result in his death. This death hurts on so many levels because you spent two seasons with this crazy yet thoughtful character and you have to be the one to end his life or let him take someone else's. Kenny was a great guy and he got to be with Katjaa and Duck in the end.

1 Lee

Clementine leaning against Lee in The Walking Dead

Words cannot accurately explain the emotional impact this death had on the players. A bitten Lee handcuffs himself to a pole so he can't grab Clementine when he turns. The player must choose to tell Clementine to shoot Lee or to leave. Either choice here is heartbreaking as you can't bear to witness the loss of such an amazing character.

Lee took care of Clementine throughout season one and he did a great job; he taught her so many life lessons as well as how to survive the apocalypse. Many of these life lessons carry over into the other seasons as well, emphasizing the impact he had on Clementine when she was younger. Lee was a fantastic character in a phenomenal game. He is sure to be regarded as one of the best written characters of all time for many years to come.
