Gears 5 has come down with a bit of Dark Fate. Released alongside the "Operation 1 Characters Pack" comes two characters from the upcoming film Terminator: Dark Fate. Joining the already present Sarah Connor and T-800 will be Grace (portrayed by MacKenzie Davis in both the film and game) and the Rev-9 Terminator. I guess the Locust threat wasn't the worst thing the COG Army would come up against.

The aforementioned Operation 1 Pack includes past and present Gears characters. Players will now be able to control the likes of General RAAM (from the original Gears of War), a standard COG soldier (basically Carmine), DeeBee (introduced in Gears of War 4), and Warden (from Gears 5). In regular multiplayer, these characters will act like basic skins. In Arcade and Horde mode, each one will have unique abilities.

While playing in Arcade, Escape, and Horde modes, both COG and RAAM will have the "Bullets for Blood" skill. This will grant them extra active reload ammo for successful kills. COG will also have access to an ultimate ability called "Team Revive." This will allow him to instantly revive downed allies while in close proximity to them. DeeBee and Warden can make use of the "Xray Vision" skill, which should be self-explanatory (they can see through walls).

Players will have multiple ways of earning these character skins. You can take the easy route and pony up 500 iron (which is roughly $5 USD) per character, or you can take the lengthier approach and grind out some Totem challenges.

As the official website explains, Totems are the new way to gain different skins in Gears 5. By completing various challenges, players will earn scrap that they can craft into different Totems for whichever Hero or villain they want. Each character has five challenges associated with them and players will need to have a Totem active to make progress in those challenges. It's kind of a mess, but at least you'll be able to earn them for free.

Operation 1 marks the first major DLC release for Gears 5, so expect more to come in the following months. I'm sure we'll see other veterans of the series return to the fray.
