This list covers some of the best mounts in the game, as well as when you should be looking for them. Some mounts are available during pre-Hardmode, others can only be found in Master mode. Here's everything you need to know about the best mounts in Terraria.

Best Pre-Hardmode Mounts In Terraria 1.4

terraria honeyed goggles bee mount
  • Bee, Honeyed Goggles
  • Lava Shark, Superheated Blood

There are some brand new additions to the pre-Hardmode mounts in Terraria 1.4. Even with the shiny new mounts, sometimes it's a good idea to head back a couple of years and pick up an old, reliable mount.

Bee - Honeyed Goggles

The Bee was introduced way back in Terraria 1.2 (that's 2013, by the way) but is still one of the best early game mounts in the game. Getting the Honeyed Goggles is one of the main reasons why you should fight the Queen Bee, probably multiple times until you get it to drop.

  • Honeyed Goggles are dropped by the Queen Bee. The item has a five percent chance to drop.
  • The Bee mount is very slow on the ground but has a longer flight time than any other pre-Hardmode mount.
  • When paired with a Cloud in a Bottle or a Featherfall Potion riding the Bee mount is basically like having wings.

Lava Shark - Superheated Blood

Introduced with the 1.4 Journey's End update, the Lava Shark is a Hellstone-miners dream. When you ride it you can swim in lava, and you won't take damage. If you're finding the grind for Molten Armor and tools a bit of a nightmare, the Lava Shark is the mount for you.

  • The Superheated Blood (the item that spawns the Lava Shark mount) is found in Hellstone Crates and Obsidian Crates while fishing.
  • You will need the Lavaproof Fishing bag to fish in lava. Check out our extended guide on fishing here.
  • The Lava Shark can swim in lava, water, and honey. It will protect you against burning in lava, but blocks like Hellstone will still hurt you.

Other Mounts In Pre-Hardmode

Here are the other mounts in pre-Hardmode Terraria.

  • Slime - Summoned with the Slimy Saddle item, this is another classic mount. It can float, jumps pretty high, and will deal damage to enemies you hit. Dropped by the King Slime.
  • Turtle - Summoned with the Hardy Saddle, the Turtle is basically like a baby Lava Shark, used to travel across the water quickly. Very slow on land. Found in Golden and Titanium Crates while fishing.
  • Painted Horse, Majestic Horse, Dark Horse - Added with 1.4, these Horse mounts are available from the Zoologist NPC for the price of 25 gold coins. You just need to hit 30 percent of the Bestiary to be able to buy them.
  • Bunny - Summoned with the Fuzzy Carrot, you get this mount for completing five fishing quests from the Angler.
  • Pogo Stick - Sold by the Party Girl for 25 Gold, this one is just for fun. Very bouncy.
  • Golf Cart - Added alongside all the new Golf mechanics, the Golf Cart goes vroom vroom and is sold by the Golfer for 50 gold coins. You have to defeat Skeletron and hit a golf score of 2,000 before you can buy it.
  • Flamingo - Sold by the Zoologist for 20 gold coins, this mount floats and swims in water and goes pretty fast. Can only be purchased after hitting 25 percent of the Bestiary.

Best Mounts In Hardmode Terraria 1.4

terraria mounts hardmode
  • Unicorn, Blessed Apple
  • Winged Slime, Gelatinous Pillion
  • UFO, Cosmic Car Key
  • Witch's Broom (Expert Mode Only)
  • Drill, Drill Containment Unit

Hardmode has plenty of unique mounts that all have their uses. From the Unicorn, one of the easiest to get, to the all-powerful Drill Containment Unit, here's what you need to know about the best mounts in Hardmode.

Unicorn - Blessed Apple

The Unicorn is one of the fastest mounts in Hardmode and also one of the easiest to acquire. You just need to farm Unicorns in the Hallowed biome that spawns on your world.

  • Dropped by Unicorns.
  • One of the best pre-Plantera Hardmode mounts. Grants invulnerability at a high speed and goes super fast.

Winged Slime - Gelatinous Pillion

Dropped by the Queen Slime, the Winged Slime is one of the best boss-fighting mounts in Hardmode thanks to its maneuverability and the Summon damage it can do. A good mount for a Summoner build.

  • Has a 25 percent chance to drop from the Queen Slime.
  • Can function as wings, as it glides and falls slowly.

UFO - Cosmic Car Key

terraria martian event

The UFO is a slow-moving but mobile mount that is ideal for building. We wouldn't recommend using it for a big boss fight (the Slime or Witch's Broom is better for that) but it can be useful for adding finishing touches to your megabase.

  • Has a 16 percent drop chance from the Martian Saucer during the Martian Invasion event.

Witch's Broom

terraria mourning wood pumpkin moon

This Expert-only mount is one of the best in Hardmode thanks to its ability to fly infinitely. It's marginally better than the UFO, mostly because it can travel through liquids and has a smaller hitbox (so you can travel through smaller spaces without getting off the mount.)

  • Dropped by Mourning Wood during the Pumpkin Moon event.
  • Can fly infinitely.

Drill - Drill Containment Unit

The Drill is one of the most difficult items to craft in all of Terraria, requiring 160 Luminite, 600 Chlorophyte Or, as well as 600 Glowing Mushrooms. And that's just the start. It's worth it though: this infinite-flight mount is the fastest method of mining blocks in the entire game.

  • You will need to beat the Moon Lord at least twice to get enough Luminite to craft the DCU.
  • Can fly infinitely and is the fastest way to mine blocks in the game.
