The Queen of the Jungle, Plantera is a Hardmode boss that you must defeat to progress into the later stages of Terraria. Her Bulbs begin to spawn once the Mechanical Bosses are defeated, and you must search for them in the deepest depths of the Underground Jungle biome.

Plantera is not an easy fight. The tight spaces of the Jungle paired with the swarms of constantly spawning Hardmode Jungle enemies mean it can be a struggle to defeat her without a sound strategy. Here's a guide that covers the best weapons, armor, and some strategies to make the fight easier.

How To Summon Plantera

Plantera's Bulbs will only spawn once you have defeated all three of the Mechanical Bosses: The Destroyer, The Twins, and Skeletron Prime.

Check out more about the typical Boss Progression in Terraria in our comprehensive guide.

You will be notified that the Bulbs have started to spawn by this message: The jungle grows restless...

Bulbs do appear on the minimap if they spawn somewhere you've already explored, and they emit a very faint light to help you find them in areas you're yet to explore. To spawn Plantera you just need to destroy a single Bulb with a Pickaxe.

Once destroyed, Plantera instantly spawns, and the fight begins.

Best Weapons To Defeat Plantera

We recommend that you try a Ranged build for Plantera, as evading her main jaw and surrounding claws is essential to winning the fight. Other builds can work, though. Here's a list of our build guides for Terraria 1.4.

Here's a look at the weapons we recommend for each class to take on Plantera with.

  • Ranged - The Ranged build has a lot of great weapon options. We really like the Megashark for its massive damage output, and if you dig out a large enough arena (more on that in a moment) the reliable Daedalus Stormbow can be used very reliably.
  • Melee - As big Yoyo fans we highly recommend the Yelets Yoyo. Combined with a Yoyo bag it can shred through Plantera in a few minutes. You could also run with the classic Light Discs if you've managed to craft them all.
  • Magic - Lots of options here. The Nimbus Rod is great, the Golden Shower inflicts the Ichor debuff (boosts your damage), or you could try something like the Sky Fracture.

Best Armor For The Plantera Fight

Once you defeated the Mechanical Bosses you should craft a full set of Hallowed Armor. Customize the helmet to fit your class and you should be ready to go in the Plantera fight.

  • Use Hallowed Armor with the Hallowed Helmet for a Ranged Build. It boosts your ranged damage and critical chance.
  • Use Hallowed Armor with the Headgear for a Mage build. It increases your max mana and magic damage.
  • Use the Hallowed Armor with a Mask for a Melee build. Increases melee damage and melee speed.
  • Use the Hallowed Hood for a Summoner build. Increases max minions and minion damage.
  • You can also use either Chlorophyte Armor or Turtle Armor. Both are more than capable of keeping you alive while fighting Plantera.

Plantera Fight Strategy

Fighting in the Underground Jungle surrounded by Jungle minions is not easy. However, there are lots of ways you can make this fight more bearable. Here are just a few tips on how to prepare for the fight, and how the fight should play out. Credit to Tap Tap for the screenshot.

  • Plantera has a few different forms with different attacks. She will move slowly around, hooking onto blocks, firing poisonous seeds, and shooting out Thorn Balls. Mobility is, therefore, very important.
  • Wings are essential. You will need to dodge Plantera's attacks and navigate the Underground Jungle. Check out our list of the best wings in Terraria 1.4 to get an idea of which ones you should take with you into the fight.
  • Clear out a large area of the Jungle. The larger the area, the easier it will be to dodge and weave around Plantera. Set up a regular boss fight arena (with Heart Lanterns, Campfires, traps if you feel like it) and the fight will be much easier.
  • The size of the area you clear out should be the size of one screen. Make it even larger if you're playing in Expert or Master mode. The more space you have the easier it is to kite Plantera.
  • Get buffed up. Eat food for the Well Fed buff, consume potions that complement your class, and make sure to use the Sharpening Station and other buff stations to get you prepared for the fight.

Plantera drops loads of amazing items to carry you into the next stage of Hardmode. You're looking for things like the Grenade Launcher and the Pygmy Staff. Plantera will always drop the Jungle Key, which opens the Jungle Temple so you can fight the next boss, the Golem.

Remember, you can fight Plantera multiple times to farm for all her drops. Plantera's Bulbs spawn pretty regularly, and once you've found the one you'll likely find a few more over the course of the in-game days. If you want to fight her immediately after defeating her for the first time, Mirror back to your bed and sleep. Another Bulb should spawn.
