There are dozens and dozens of different pets in Terraria, more than you can really even count. From tiny dinosaurs to floating skeleton heads, Terraria's pets truly do run the gamut. However, some of the rarer varieties can be difficult to get your hands on.

To celebrate the release of Terraria 1.4 on consoles (an update that did introduce a couple of new pets to the game) we're going to catalog the rarest pets in the game. As one can imagine, some of these hard-to-find companions are highly sought after.

Updated on June 24th, 2022 by Geoffrey Martin: Terraria is a deep and extensive game, one that offers players tons of activities, quests, crafting items, and most importantly, awesome pets who can join you on your adventures. The game features dozens upon dozens of unique pets, some more traditional than others. For those of you that are looking for some rare pets to add to your collection, be sure to check out the following ones that are quite rare overall.

12 Volt Bunny - Lightning Carrot

a volt bunny pet encountering a player in terraria

Does the Volt Bunny look familiar to you? Well, there's a good reason for that as it clearly pays loving homage to Pikachu. The Volt Bunny can be acquired via the Lightning Carrot; an item that can be purchased from the Zoologist. Interestingly, this electrically charged pet can only be obtained once at least 50% of the game's bestiary is completed.

Despite looking really cool, the Volt Bunny can emit light that easily spreads across certain dark areas. This unique feature makes it one of the rarer pets in the entirety of the game. Just be sure to take your time fleshing out that bestiary in order to get this zap-filled bunny.

11 Squashling - Magical Pumpkin Seed

squashling pet and character in terraria

The Squashling pet looks like a blend of a creepy jack-o-lantern and a walking vine. What makes this unique pet so rare is that it is only featured in Halloween drops, with a 0.5% chance of dropping. You can obtain Squashling via a Magical Pumpkin Seed, an item that you likely won't stumble across easily.

The Squashling doesn't necessarily have any highly coveted or special powers, however, it does hop and fly around trying to keep up with you as you move around. If you want a spooky yet cute pet to add to your Terraria collection then be sure to seek out a Magical Pumpkin seed during the Halloween time of year.

10 The Baby Dinosaur - Amber Mosquito

terraria baby dinosaur

The Baby Dinosaur is summoned with the Amber Mosquito, an item that drops from putting Silt, Slush, and Desert Fossil into an Extractinator. When summoned, the Baby Dinosaur is a pet that follows the player around and is picked up by a flying pterosaur if your character takes flight or gets too far away.

Why is it one of the rarest pets in Terraria? It has a 1/10,000 chance to drop from Silt and Slush in the Extractinator, while the chance from a Desert Fossil (if you can even find much of this resource) has a slightly higher chance at 27/100,000. It's probably the rarest pet in Terraria if you're not accounting for some of the game's best mods.

9 The Turtle Pet - Seaweed

terraria turtle pet

The Turtle Pet is a rare drop in Underground Jungle's Jungle Shrines and Living Mahogany Trees. It has a very slim chance to drop from these chests, and each world generation only has so many of these chests, which means you might need to explore a couple of different worlds before you find the Seaweed item to summon the pet.

Since the 1.4 update, you can now get Seaweed from Jungle Crates and Bramble Crates while fishing, which does make this a slightly easier pet to acquire. You will probably find chests while farming the jungle to make a hook or collecting other resources.

8 Wisp - Wisp in a Bottle

terraria wisp in a bottle pet

The Wisp is a hardmode, post-Plantera light pet that drops from Blue Armored Bones, Rusty Armored Bones, and Hell Armored Bones (these spawn in the Dungeon once Plantera has been defeated.) It's probably one of the best light pets in the game because it sticks closer to the player than other pets.

It's also one of the rarest: it has a 1/400 (or 0.25 percent) chance to drop from the skeletons. You'll need to farm these mobs to be in with a chance to get the Wisp. If you want a light pet, you can check out our guide on how to get the pet Fairy.

7 Baby Skeletron Head - Bone Key

The Bone Key isn't exactly rare, but it's still very, very difficult to get. You have to defeat the Dungeon Guardian for a Bone Key to drop: yes, that's the impossibly powerful Skeleton head that spawns when you try to enter the dungeon before Skeletron is defeated.

There are all sorts of different strategies on how to defeat the Dungeon Guardian. Because it will kill you in one shot regardless of your gear, the only option is to try and outrun it. A platform that spans across the entire world is really the only way to try and win the fight and get the guaranteed Bone Key drop. The Dungeon Guardian is the hardest boss in Terraria if you're counting it on the list.

6 Pet Lizard - Lizard Egg

The Lizard Egg drops from Flying Snakes and Lihzards in the Jungle Temple and spawns a small green pet lizard that follows the player around. It is statistically one of the rarest item drops in Terraria.

The egg has a 1/1000 drop chance (that's 0.1 percent) from the mobs in the Jungle Temple. Thankfully, these mobs do spawn quite regularly, so you can set up an easy farm to wait for the pet summoning item to drop.

5 Puppy - Dog Whistle

terraria pets puppy

The Dog Whistle summons the pet Puppy, one of the cutest pets in Terraria and also one of the rarest. It's only available during the Christmas event and is dropped from Presents at a chance of 29/12,000, that's just a 0.24 percent chance.

RELATED: Terraria: Best Magic Build In Terraria 1.4

Because the Christmas event only happens once a year (and you can't trick your game into thinking it's Christmas) then you only have a slim window to collect enough presents to get the Dog Whistle. Presents aren't exactly guaranteed either.

4 Baby Grinch - Baby Grinch's Mischief Whistle

terraria pets baby grinch

Much like the Dog Whistle, the Baby Grinch's Mischief Whistle only drops during a specific event: the Frost Moon Event. To be in with a chance of getting this cute little Christmas menace, you need to defeat the Ice Queen.

The Grinch's Whistle has between a 0.95 percent and 1.67 percent chance to drop from the Ice Queen, which doesn't make it that statistically rare. It's rare because you have to farm the Frost Moon and Ice Queen to guarantee a drop.

3 The Companion Cube

This is an interesting one. The Companion Cube is sold by the Traveling Merchant, but the numbers and stats about how rare (or not rare) the cube is quite confusing. There are no completely solid numbers on quite how rare the cube is.

A number that used to get thrown about a lot in the community was around 1/10,000, although that is probably not accurate. The item IS rare though. Very rare. Plus it costs 5 Platinum to buy, which also makes it the most expensive item in Terraria. Even if you do get a Traveling Merchant with one in stock you need enough coins to buy it.

2 The Zephyr Fish

terraria pets zephyr fish

The Zephyr Fish is a rare fish pet that flies around behind the player. It has a very small chance to drop when fishing at any body of water, at a chance of 1/800 (0.125%) when you have 50 percent fishing power, though this does go up to 0.25 percent when you have 100 percent fishing power.

Although the chances are quite slim of getting the Zephyr Fish, if you're keen on completing the Angler's fishing quests and kitting yourself out with all the best fishing gear, then you might just stumble across the Zephyr by accident.

1 Black Cat - Unlucky Yarn

terraria pets black cat

Unlucky Yarn is a fitting name for this rare item that summons the Black Cat. It's only available during the Halloween event and is dropped from Goodie bags.

You'll have to farm lots of different mobs to get plenty of Goodie bags. The Unlucky Yarn has a 0.67 percent chance to drop. Thankfully, almost every mob drops Goodie bags during the event, so you might get it just by playing the game as normal.
