Terraria is now out on the Nintendo Switch, the last console that had yet to fall to its 16-bit might.
If you’re a gamer, you probably already know about Terraria, the 2D Minecraft-like sandbox game that lets you hunt down unicorns, build magic castles, and battle terrifying floating eyeballs.
The core of Terraria is exploration, either by digging downward in a series of tunnels that would make one of Tolkien’s dwarves jealous, exploring the world horizontally by simply clicking left or right and holding the stick in that direction, or by exploring its byzantine crafting system with over 3,500 unique items to discover.
You start with a pickaxe, a sword, and a wood ax, and then build your empire. As you gather more resources from different biomes you’ll encounter NPCs you can take home with you to give you more crafting options, as well as enemy bosses to defeat. Surviving requires quick reflexes and the right gear to meet any challenge.
Terraria first released on PC way back in 2011, and then migrated to mobile and the PS Vita in 2013, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014, and then the Nintendo 3DS in 2015. Now, 4 years after we thought it had conquered its last console and sold over 27 million copies, Terraria has been released on the Nintendo Switch.
The Switch version is being billed as the ultimate Terraria, with 8-player multiplayer support, touchscreen support for combat and inventory management, and updated crafting with over 800 additional recipes over the base PC version. It doesn’t have the same sort of modding support as the PC version, which technically brings the number of new items you could add to Terraria to something approaching infinity, but it still sounds like a very good edition of the game.
Otherwise, it’s basically the same award-winning Terraria you know and love.
Terraria is out now on the Nintendo eShop, or if you’re a dinosaur and require an actual physical copy of your games, you can buy it in a store sometime later this summer.
