Nintendo has announced that Tetris 99 will have its very first tournament this coming weekend.

Nobody expected the battle royale genre to hit a classic game series like Tetris, but then it did on February 13th with the surprise release of Tetris 99. And nobody expected it to be really, REALLY good, but it is. And Nintendo is planning to make it better by holding its very first official tournament this weekend.

For those not in the know, Tetris 99 is like Tetris, only instead of playing against a single competitor, you actually play against 99 other competitors. Whenever you make a bunch of rows disappear in your game, you send “garbage rows” to any of the 99 other competitors in the hopes that it knocks them out of the competition. And just like other battle royale games, the last person standing wins.

The best thing about Tetris 99 is that it’s 100% free. The second best thing about Tetris is that if you’re good you could actually earn some Nintendo money by taking part in the game’s first tournament happening this weekend.

It’s called the MAXIMUS CUP event, so named as the winner of each Tetris 99 is awarded something called a TETRIS MAXIMUS. And yes, Nintendo decided to make sure this tournament is very loud by making sure every letter is capitalized.

The MAXIMUS CUP starts on March 8th at 5:00 AM PST and runs until March 10th at 11:49 PM PST. Everyone who plays Tetris 99 during this time period is automatically entered into the contest, and the top 999 people with the most wins (or TETRIS MAXIMUS, as the game calls it) will win the grand prize of 999 My Nintendo Gold Points.

Since one point equals one cent, that’s basically 10 bucks in cash you can spend on anything in the Nintendo eShop.

This contest is only open to residents of the United States, Mexico, and Canada (excluding Quebec). You must be 13 or older to enter, and if you're under the age of 18 you need parental consent.

All 999 winners will be announced on March 24th. So get your thumbs ready for some intense Tetris action this weekend.
