Masahiro Sakurai, Smash Bros. game director and the center of an almost cult-like following of Smash fans, can now finally take a much-deserved break. Yesterday's presentation was the last one he'll have to give for quite a while as Sora was announced as the last DLC fighter to arrive in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Sora was a good choice, honestly. No single character would ever satisfy everyone, especially given the number of Waluigi fans out there, but Sora was probably the most popular non-Smash character who still hadn't received an invitation--well, not until yesterday anyway.

But the announcement was bittersweet. While Sora's arrival in Smash was lauded, it also meant the end of Smash's metagame: wildly speculating on who the next Smash character would be, only to have your dreams crushed or confirmed when Sakurai next gets on camera.

Knowing this would be the last time, Smash fans took to Twitter to express their appreciation for everything Sakurai has done over the past few years, sending #ThankYouSakurai trending. And Sakurai noticed.

"I'm the one who's truly grateful," Sakurai wrote on Twitter. "It's thanks to the support of so many people!"

A truly heartwarming farewell, at least until the next Nintendo console comes along.

While Sora was the big news, another iconic video game character was also announced for Smash Bros and hasn't received nearly as much acclaim. Doomguy, also known as the Doom Slayer, will arrive with Smash's Round 11 DLC pack on October 18 as a Mii Fighter costume. Now, Doomguy and Isabelle can finally be in the same game together after all those memes!

Sorry, Master Chief, but maybe next time you’ll get that invitation. Until then, there’s always mods.
