The division between platforms is slowly waning. Once upon a time gamers were stuck in their PlayStation, PC or Xbox worlds. Now the walls are coming down creating a greater sense of collaboration in the multiplayer landscape. Friends are no longer divided by console, at least for some games. Xbox started to heavily share properties with PC, opening the door for cross-play. Soon games like Fortnite and Rocket League started experimenting with the idea.

PlayStation was the longest holdout but finally decided to give it a shot. The dream of playing across systems is finally being realized. The games to follow are not cross-play for every platform but they do support it in some capacity. It does exclude games that are shared exclusively between PC and one other console, simply because there are so many of them. So without further ado, let's begin.

10 Paladins (Xbox One, Switch, PC, PS4) - 83

Paladins, from SMITE creators Hi-Rez Studios, is a free-to-play first-person shooter. It involves 44 characters fighting in team-based competitions, much like Overwatch. Unlike Overwatch, though, Paladins can be played across all its platforms. The addition of cross-play improved the matchmaking speed and was a welcome addition for the multiplayer game. Paladin has about 35 million players, according to PlayStation. It must have been great news when PlayStation jumped on the cross-play train. A free-to-play game across every platform is a recipe for increased player count and accessibility.

9 World of Warships: Legends (PS4, Xbox One) - 83

World of Warships: Legends, beating out Paladins' 7.6 user score with a 8.0, follows the trend of free-to-play games going cross-play. The game follows in the footsteps of Wargaming's previous games, World of Tanks and World of Warplanes. The developer is known for massively multiplayer online games based on vehicular combat. After a major update in 2019, PlayStation and Xbox fans were able to play together. This marked the first Wargaming game to feature cross-play and the developer teased more cross-play support for their future games.

8 SMITE (Xbox One, Switch, PC, PS4) - 83

Hi-Rez Studios really jumped on cross-play, making their battle arena game playable across every platform. The developers want friends to play together no matter the platform, according to a press release. In the same spirit, they announced cross-progression. SMITE has an 8.2 user score and about 30 million players. It's a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena that features more than 100 mythological characters. You can turn to people to stone with Medusa or smash enemies with Mjolnir. SMITE has also established itself in the E-sports arena, which has garnered a rich ecosystem and a wide audience.

7 Wargroove (Switch, Xbox One, PC) - 84

Wargroove is a retro turn-based combat game that features 12 playable characters across four factions. It boasts 50 hours of single-player gameplay and a player creation tool where levels are shared online. Lastly, it includes a competitive and co-op multiplayer across all major platforms, except PlayStation.

It included cross-play upon release but was a latecomer to PlayStation. The original release for Switch, Xbox One, and Switch was January while the PlayStation release was in July. The PlayStation fans are still on their secluded island while they watch all their friends play together.

6 Fortnite (Xbox One, PS4, Switch, PC, Mobile) - 85

Speaking of PlayStation being late to the party. Fortnite, which recently entered into season 2, made major ripples in the gaming industry when they announced their cross-play initiative. Xbox's push for Minecraft crossplay was already an exciting venture and Fortnite's involvement amped up the enthusiasm for cross-play. PlayStation was the last hold out but eventually gave in on September 26, 2018. Fortnite is now cross-playable with every single platform, which is a massive achievement in and of itself. Thanks to Fortnite's huge success, cross-play is now more feasible than ever.

5 Mortal Kombat 11 (PS4, Xbox One, Switch) - 86

This ranking along with the next one should be taken with a grain of salt. Mortal Kombat 11 has an incredibly low user score of 3.1 while critics seem to like it. The game advertised a new installment of their 25-year running story, a deep customization option and of course new gruesome fatalities. It also offered some unique DLC characters including Spawn, Joker, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator. Cross-play for Mortal Kombat 11 did not make a huge splash because it was quietly added during an update. It's still a nice feature for fans and it proves the trend is becoming more and more normal.

4 Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (Xbox One, PS4) - 86

This is another entry with another low user score, 4.6, but it set the groundwork for one of gaming's biggest successes. Player Unknown's Battlegrounds, PUBG. It hit its peak popularity in 2017 and invigorated the battle royale genre. It came out of nowhere and quickly grew into gaming's first battle royale phenomenon. PUBG even replaced DOTA 2 for the top concurrent users on Steam (back in 2017) and was nominated for game of the year. It introduced cross-play in 2019 but just recently allowed parties between the two consoles. There are currently no cross-play features for the PC version of the game.

3 Rocket League (Xbox One, PS4, PC, Switch) - 87

Rocket League is a simple idea that was executed well. The car soccer game can be enjoyed in casual and competitive settings. No matter how you play, it's always a fun time - unless you're getting destroyed. It was released in 2015 and still has about 62,000 players, according to Steam Charts.

Rocket League was another major game during the rise of cross-play. The wall between platforms was punctured when Rocket League announced cross-play support. Sony was holding out like usual even though developers Psyonix said the game was ready. Luckily, Sony backed down and Rocket League gained full cross-play support.

2 Pinball FX3 (PS4, PC, Switch, Xbox) - 89

Pinball FX3 is a rather surprising entry but it has garnered substantial acclaim. The Pinball simulation game is advertised as being the biggest community pinball game. It includes multiplayer and impressively detailed pinball machines. It's known for making tables out of famous properties including Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Fallout, Marvel, The Walking Dead and more. Players across numerous platforms can compete by challenging each other's scores. The game launched with a focus on multiplayer and training newcomers in the art of pinball.

1 Minecraft (Xbox One, Switch, PC, Mobile, PS4) - 93

It's amazing and a testament to the developers that Minecraft is still wildly popular. It was released in 2009 and is still going strong thanks to a dedicated player base and support from companies like Microsoft. The game is still swarming with players and unique creations. Back in 2017, Minecraft players were brought together by the aptly named "Better Together" update, which combined all the different versions of Minecraft into one shared version. PlayStation joined in on the fun two years later.
