To say that The Ascent is the debut of Indie studio Neon Giant is an incredible feat in itself. The game's overall quality feels like a project that a large studio created rather than the only 11 minds behind the game.

But with a more modest team comes its problems, and unfortunately for The Ascent, the developers don't satisfyingly answer all the questions you have fixed in the back of your mind. Conundrums present themselves through the story; however, plots introduced later in the game are never fully explored.

6 How Did They Build Veles?

The world of Veles showcases towering high-rises and plentiful landscapes where almost everything finds its roots in technology. The world looks fantastic and is a very well-constructed portrayal of a dystopian cyberpunk world. But the big question is just how did they build Veles?

The whole place looks incredibly complex to put together; it's difficult to see where these buildings start and where they end. Not to mention the resources would be a challenge to obtain. It's improbable that not a single person lost their life trying to piece all this together.

5 Could The Ascent Group Ever Be Rebuilt?

So, you've finished the game with the memory of the now non-existent Ascent group burned into your thoughts. And by no means is this a bad thing considering the sort of things the group was known to do. But with the amount of power these members hold and the idea of repurposing the team already in motion, there's a significant chance the Ascent could form once more.

Reestablishing this organization would bring back pre-existing problems as well as new ones. Hopefully, these guys never get back into their place of power again. Veles would be better off for it.

4 Just What Is The Monster From The Gate?

The Ascent portal gate with monster tentacles emerging from it. Red and orange glow around.

Amidst all the panic and blunder of stressing to complete the final mission (Unhandled Exception), you'll begin to see a Lovecraftian-type monster emerging out of the gate you were sent to shut. Isn't that some spectacular timing?

You might be cautiously hoping you'll battle this monstrous beast, which you won't. Although maybe that's a good thing since bullets probably don't do much other than tickle the creature. Nothing is known about what emerges, as it's not long before it returns through the gate. The mystery is fantastic at times, but this is one we would've liked to uncover.

3 Do Other Planets Have A Similar System To Veles?

The Ascent, neon lighting. Cyberpunk world, two heavily armoured individuals.

With such an authoritative hold over every being on Veles, those in charge dictate all that happens. The residents are their army, and there's not exactly an easy way to retreat from that life. Veles is secluded from other planets, with it often mentioned how arduous the journey to other worlds could be.

Would it make more sense for these other worlds to be laid back with their ruling? Is technology the leading cause for all the violence of Veles? And would the planets with minor or zero technology still struggle to be at peace with those they share a home with? Other issues can certainly factor into why disagreements occur, but it's hard to ignore how much of an effect technology has had on the people of Veles.

2 Would The Ascent Be Better As Single-player Only?

The Ascent. Wide shot of combat. Side-scroller. Four characters with a blue translucent shield around them.

In The Ascent, you can play the game with some friends or alternatively be the lone wolf, beginning and completing the journey on your own. Unfortunately, the multiplayer feature doesn't bring anything new to the table, and it almost seems redundant at times because of the tight-knit story of The Ascent.

Some games simply don't need a multiplayer mode, and sure while it's always fun hanging out with some friends and experiencing a story together, it's not always necessary to include. It's difficult not to think about how The Ascent may have stood better on its own if the campaign was single-player only.

1 Will Twin-stick Shooters Make A Comeback?

The Ascent protagonist running through a neon-lit cyberpunk city. Predominately pink and blue lighting.

Twin-stick shooters are a mostly forgotten sub-genre in the current gaming industry, and the ones that do launch tend to slip out of the public eye very quickly. And with how competitive the market is, developers have to cater to what gamers are loving at that moment in time. But every once in a while, an indie game utilizing lesser-known mechanics becomes a top hit.

It's high time for this to also be the case with shooters in the style of games like The Ascent. Games are great in whichever form, but so is variety. And we hope that variety once again introduces us to the world of late 90s gaming.
