Long before release, The Callisto Protocol caught attention because it shares a creator with Dead Space. And since that game is a beloved entry in the survival horror genre, people were optimistic that Callisto would hit the same heights.

It certainly bares some resemblance to Dead Space, except instead of a ship filled with Necromorphs, the protagonist finds himself in a prison filled with different kinds of monsters. To escape his horrible predicament, he needs to team up with the few remaining survivors left in the building and get out of there. Is all this worth experiencing? Here's everything you need to know to answer that question.

Review

TheGamer's review of The Callisto Protocol came from the mind of Andrew King. He heavily praised the visuals of the game, even going as far as stating that "The Callisto Protocol is possibly the best looking game to launch on the new generation of consoles." But aside from the graphics and some of the animations, he wasn't completely happy with the overall product.

Though it looks gorgeous on the surface, a dozen hours of nothing special can have a clarifying effect. Like a monstrous two-headed enemy banging Jacob's head into the ground until it collapses, the game's tedium forces you to reckon with the fact that there just isn't much once the facade splatters away.

Andrew claimed the game "doesn't have an original bone in its exo-suited body." This comes from the fact it shares several of the same ideas and aesthetics as its spiritual precursor, Dead Space. Unoriginality wasn't the only complaint he had, though. He was also unhappy about several other things, including the story and script, which he felt let down its well-known cast.

Time Expenditure

This game is very linear, so it isn't too surprising that the adventure is short. In fact, you can beat the main story in around 11 hours.

Yet, completionists who love to do everything a game has to offer are in for a longer experience. After all, there are collectibles to find and achievements or trophies to earn. Even with those things, though, the game will only take about 14 hours to finish.

What Players Are Saying

Better Options Out There - Ben Jessey

Dead Space casts a large shadow, and The Callisto Protocol was always going to struggle to escape from it. Yet, not being as good as Issac Clake's adventures isn't its only crime. Everything about the game is fairly interesting at first, from the combat to the characters to the story. But none of those things develop in any meaningful or exciting ways. Thus, things get bland quickly. That's not to say the game is awful. It is simply average. And there are plenty of above-average games in the genre that are more deserving of your attention.

Wait For A Sale - Axel Bosso

The Callisto Protocol tries to bring a new spin to the Dead Space formula while also trying to be its own thing. The results are mixed, with outstanding level design and some breath-taking environments that fell short with a lackluster protagonist and the recycling of relevant and boring enemies. Its combat is a hit or miss depending on who you ask, but I found it entertaining and fun — when it works.

Just No - Amanda Hurych

The combat isn't fun when there are multiple enemies and your camera just goes wherever it wants to. Audio logs consist of 5-second videos of people saying, "Something's not right here." And the linearity of this game detracts from what could have been a really awesome setting. The Callisto Protocol is not worth your time or money.
