The turn-based strategy game based on Dark Crystal is taking design cues from a classic series of the genre.

Players will be able to choose from Final Fantasy Tactics style jobs in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics according to a new a dev diary style video released on YouTube from En Masse Entertainment, the game’s publisher.

The video goes so far as to directly shout out Final Fantasy Tactics as direct inspiration for the job system in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics. While the system in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is similar to the one found in Final Fantasy Tactics in certain ways, the new system iterates on the formula in some interesting ways, too.

Like Final Fantasy Tactics, starting characters in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will have a limited pool of jobs available. Where Final Fantasy Tactics limited characters to two jobs, though, The Dark Crystal allows characters to choose from three classes: Soldier, Scout, and Mender.

Another place where the new system departs from its inspiration is secondary jobs. Players will be able to choose Primary and Secondary jobs for each of the characters in their teams. Primary jobs give characters three ability slots for battle and multiple abilities to choose from between battles. Secondary jobs, once unlocked at level five, add two ability slots to use in combat that allows players to choose abilities from that job’s list in addition to the Primary Job’s list.

A character’s primary job determines their advancement path, i.e. Soldiers become Paladins or Stone Wardens, Scouts become Trackers or Thieves, and Menders become Adepts or Bramble Sages in the second level of the jobs tree. While there appear to be fewer total jobs overall in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics than Final Fantasy Tactics, the addition of secondary jobs allows an almost equal level of potential choices while still allowing for flexibility in a given party’s makeup.

The jobs available will change depending on which species of Dark Crystal universe creatures players choose but  jobs for the Gelflings were the only ones detailed in the video. In the Final Fantasy Tactics tradition jobs start off general and become more specialized in the middle of the tree then narrowing again at the top in what The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics calls Advanced Jobs.

It has been twelve years since Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift was released so The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is probably the closest thing to a new Final Fantasy Tactics game we’ll see any time soon. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will be released on February 4 on Nintendo Switch, PS4, XBOX One and PC.
