The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics was first announced during E3 all the way back in June, just ahead of the August release of the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Netflix series on which the game is based. As the hype surrounding the series came and went in the following weeks, no further details about its companion video game ever surfaced. Now that's changed, as a new trailer reveals a February 4th release date, and includes some pretty adorable footage of singing Fizzgigs to boot.

As is suggested by the "tactics" part the title, the games The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics most closely resemble are those in the Final Fantasy Tactics series. Just like in its predecessors, player-controlled units in the Dark Crystal game must be maneuvered around a relatively small arena across uneven terrain. Movement and attacks all make use of a grid of squares into which each arena is divided.

Players will be in charge of a roster of 15 characters that appears to include most, if not all, of the heroes featured in the Netflix series. Characters can be altered through a job system, meaning that hundreds of different unit combinations are possible.

While the game's story seems to take place within the timeline of the Netflix show—those who have seen the show can figure out just when the game takes place within the larger story from its trailers—the developers have revealed that the game will feature an entirely new side story that happens in parallel to the main adventure depicted in the source material.

Developers BonusXP are also responsible for Stranger Things: The Game, released earlier this year to middling-to-positive reviews. However, whereas Stranger Things: The Game was simply a retelling of the latest season of Stranger Things in playable form, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is, by the looks of it, a fully fleshed-out tactics game that should be able to succeed by its own merit if executed properly. Those interested in the game will be able to find out how it holds up on February 4th.
