In today's State of Play, Sony said beforehand that they would focus on Japanese developers and they certainly lived up to this promise as Square Enix rounded off the 20-minute show. The Japanese stalwarts are one of the biggest publishers and developers in the world and the veteran showed off some story cinematics and gameplay from a forthcoming title.The DioField Chronicle is a tactical RPG that looks somewhat like Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It appears that it will be using a real-time tactical battle system, from the snatches of gameplay that were shown off in the trailer. Before that though we got some background as the trailer introduced the world, which has a medieval bent as warring families or clans were presented.Related: Valkyrie Elysium Is A New Entry In the Valkyrie Series Coming In 2022"The era of myths gives way to an era of great turmoil", the voiceover began, before introducing us to the main players. There's the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire who has been having a devastating war with the Rowetale Alliance, as their crests were shown atop a map. "However," the VO continued, "one nation remained unaffected by the chaos", before it showed the final player: the Kingdom of Alletain.

Visually, The DioField Evolution looks subdued but effective and charming, while not being overly impressive graphically, but there was a nice amount of gameplay shown off for the first look at the game. There seems to be a focus on story and the world as players do tactical battle. Knowing Square Enix, there'll be plenty of strategy RPG fans to get their teeth into. Mastering the real-time tactical battles should keep players busy, but we'll have to wait to find out more details.

The DioField Chronicle is currently scheduled to release on PS4 and PS5 later this year, while there is nothing more specific regarding the launch date. Meanwhile, it's also been confirmed that it will launch on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam later this year too.
