The story of Final Fantasy VII is still being discussed by fans today, despite the fact that it was released back in 1997. The world of Final Fantasy VII was so intriguing and the characters so fascinating that fans have been coming up with theories about them since the '90s.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake series is going to be expanding on the lore of the original game, so it's possible that stories that were once fan theories could now become canon. There is one  theory that was suggested to the producer of Final Fantasy VII Remake that could make its way into the game and it involves the events that transpired thousands of years before Cloud and his friends were even born.

The Theory

Knights from Final Fantasy 7

The world of Final Fantasy VII was once populated by magic-using humanoids known as the Cetra, who would go on to be referred to as the Ancients. The Cetra were almost wiped out by an alien being known as Jenova, which crashed into the planet and created the North Crater. Jenova had the ability to copy the appearance of other beings, which it used to contact the Cetra and inflict them with a virus that transformed them into monsters.

A group of Cetra managed to defeat Jenova and seal her away within the North Crater. The non-magic-using humans would eventually become the dominant species, and the last remaining Cetra at the start of Final Fantasy VII is Aerith. The Shinra Electric Power Company would discover Jenova's remains and perform experiments on them, believing her to be a Cetra.

If  players completes the lengthy gold Chocobo quest, then they can visit an unmarked island on the world map that carries the Knights of the Round summon Materia. This Materia allows the player to use the most powerful summon in the game, as a group of thirteen knights strikes the enemy one after the other.

At the end of Final Fantasy VII, Cloud Strife leads his allies into the North Crater in order to defeat Sephiroth. Before the party gets their shot at Sephiroth, they have to take on Jenova-SYNTHESIS, which is a being composed of the remainder of Jenova's body parts. If the player has acquired the Knights of the Round Materia and uses it during the battle, then something strange happens...

If the player uses Knights of the Round against Jenova-SYNTHESIS, then the game's code takes note of the action and gives Bizarro-Sephiroth an extra sixty thousand hit points and Safer-Sephiroth an extra eighty thousand hit points.

Jenova's reaction to the Knights of the Round led to speculation that there was a connection between the two, even if the check was made to help Sephiroth put up more of a fight in the last battles in the game. This led to a fan theory about the knights being the original band of Cetra that defeated Jenova thousands of years ago. It's said in the story of Final Fantasy VII that Mako and Materia are byproducts of the Lifestream, which contains the memories of every living being. It's possible that the Knights of the Round Materia contained the memory of the knights and their last battle, and that it was waiting to be found so that they could be called on to defend the world once more.

The fan theory would have stayed a fan theory if it wasn't for an interview that took place back in 2017.

In 2017, Kotaku interviewed Yoshinori Kitase and asked him about several Final Fantasy fan theories. Kitase was the director and scenario writer of Final Fantasy VII and is the producer of the first entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. The Knights of the Round/Jenova theory was brought up:

“Everyone’s thinking too deeply, reading between the lines too much,” laughed Kitase. “That makes it difficult because if you think about it that way, we might have to make it that way. That’s definitely not true.”

It seems that it was never intended for the Knights of the Round to be connected to either the Cetra or Jenova, but the idea has now been suggested to him and he seemed open to including it.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is going to be spread across several different games and the first title is only going to cover the Midgar section of the story. The developers have said that they want to expand upon the story of the original game and the backstories of both the Cetra and Jenova have a lot of room for expansion.

If Final Fantasy VII Remake loosely follows the story of the original game, then there are several opportunities for flashbacks that show the battle between the Cetra and Jenova. The Temple of the Ancients seems like the perfect place to include the scene where Aerith has a vision of the past and witnesses her ancestors going off on one last crusade to save the world.
