In a new interview with IGN, Geoff Keighley, the host and producer of The Game Awards, has confirmed that this year’s event will take place in an all-digital format on December 10. Some had speculated that the annual award show would be postponed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but Keighley laid those claims to rest.

“We’re definitely doing it. A lot of people are [asking], ‘Are you delaying it? The Oscars are being postponed, are you postponing The Game Awards?’ We are absolutely not,” Keighley said, adding that more details about the event will be revealed in the coming weeks.

First held in 2014, The Game Awards also showcases new games and grants an in-depth look into forthcoming titles. Traditionally, digital storefronts like Steam, Xbox Games Store, Nintendo eShop, and PlayStation Store, will mark down the nominated games a few days before and after the event.

Keighley had previously worked on the Spike Video Game Awards (VGA) from 2003 to 2013. The statuette awarded to the winners at The Game Awards was designed by Keighley and Weta Workshop and represents "the evolution of the video game medium by way of an angel that ascends through digital building blocks."

Although the host doesn’t expect to have 10,000 people in the same room for the show, he does anticipate doing a live show, similar to what Gamescom - which had more than two million simultaneous spectators on opening night - did this year. The Game Awards is the latest gaming event to go online this year, following Gamescom and the Tokyo Game Show, among others.

The show, which will stream across 45 different platforms, will use three small soundstages at Los Angeles, London and Tokyo for its presentation. This year, a new innovation in accessibility category has been added to the awards list and will honor games or game technology that address accessibility features. In addition, the Game Festival, first debuted last year, will also return and include a weekend of playable game content, in-game drops, demos and live-streams.
