Xbox has revealed that the new title from Image & Form Games and Thunderful Publishing called The Gunk will launch in December later this year for PC and Xbox consoles. This news comes from an official blog post on Xbox Wire by Game Director Ulf Hartelius which was published shortly after the game was shown off during Xbox's Gamescom live stream.

In the post, Hartelius details some of the features and story beats players can expect to experience in The Gunk. The game will run at a stable 30FPS on Xbox One but will be scaled up to run in 60FPS with 4K visuals on Xbox Series X and high-end PCs, and will take players to a variety of different environments including rocky canyons, dense jungles, and more.

Hartelius also gives us a brief description of the game's story. You play as Rani, a galactic scavenger who is working with her partner Becks to mine resources from distant planets to get the cash needed to survive. After landing on what looked like a barren planet, Rani encounters the titular gunk, a substance that could bring in the big bucks, but is also slowly destroying whatever it touches

It's your job to remove the gunk and restore each habitat to its former glory before it was destroyed. Doing so will reward players with new details about each location Rani discovers and information about an ancient civilization that once lived on the planet. If you're interested in The Gunk, the game launches in December this year on PC and Xbox consoles. There's no specific release date just yet, so keep your eyes peeled for more information.

The Gunk wasn't the only game shown off during Xbox's Gamescom stream, and we do have a little bit more info on some of the publisher's upcoming projects. It's been confirmed that Crusader Kings 3 will be coming to Xbox Series X as well as PS5, and that Xbox Cloud gaming will be coming to Xbox consoles later this holiday season.
