Starward Industries, a small studio formed by ex-CD Projekt Red and Techland devs, has shared the first gameplay footage of its debut project The Invincible. The upcoming sci-fi game is based on the iconic Stanislaw Lem novel and will transport you into the original atompunk world.

The Invincible is a first-person sci-fi thriller, designed for a thoughtful single-player experience. From the first glimpse, it evokes memories of BioShock and Fallout, but instead of worlds buried deep underwater or destroyed by a nuclear war, The Invincible is set in an alternative retro-future timeline on the distant planet known as Regis 3.

As seen in the first teaser trailer, you'll find yourself on the surface of the rocky-sandy planet akin to our Mars, where scientist Dr. Yasna has to face the consequences of her actions. Your own choices will be a massive part of The Invincible, as the team is crafting multiple story paths and various endings for this cinematic survival adventure.

With its lack of digital technologies and strange analog devices on the screen instead, The Invincible looks like a well-designed environment ready to be explored. The characters wear charming retro spacesuits, ominous robots walk silently around their environment, and the space colony covered in dust can be seen in the distance — all working to cultivate a unique atmosphere and ambiance.

The game's plot is based on the classic novel Invincible by Stanislav Lem, first published in 1964. Even if you're a fan of the book, you can expect some big surprises, as the upcoming game is not an accurate recreation but more of a whole new story rooted in Lem's work.

Work on the project began at the end of 2018 using Unreal Engine, with the team mostly inspired by Alien: Isolation and Firewatch. Earlier this year, Starward Industries received additional funding, which allowed the studio to expand on the project's scope. At the same time, the release window has been shifted to 2022. The Invincible is expected to launch for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
