Welcome to The Last Farm, an indie farming game from UK-based Works In Theory. It's a game that will definitely remind you of Stardew Valley, but it'll also remind you that the world is heading towards a climate apocalypse and we're all going to need to start foraging in the ruins of former cities in order to find technology to help us survive in a harsh wasteland.

"The town of Riverside has suffered a disaster and is on the verge of starvation," reads The Last Farm's description on Steam. "They need your help to restore their farm and grow food in a harsh and unforgiving land."

And by unforgiving they mean the world as we know it is over and everyone is just trying to survive. To do that, you'll take over a shed, a barren plot of land, and turn it into a factory farm capable of supporting the town. Failure means you all starve to death, but success means living to see all your crops get destroyed by blightstorms so you starve to death a little more slowly.

Right, there are blightstorms--dust storms that will infect your crops with various diseases that reduce their nutritional value or even outright poison you. To fight back, you'll need to selectively breed crops that have an innate resistance to diseases.

It's the genetic crop system that really sets The Last Farm apart from Stardew. Selective breeding can help improve your crop yield, growth time, and resistance to disease and pestilence. Foraging in the fallen wastes can sometimes even yield lost technologies that will supercharge your breeding program or maybe even provide you with lost GMO products.

Otherwise, Stardew fans will find a lot in common with The Last Farm. The screen layout is the same, the process for farming is the same, and there's even a town you can sell your harvests and buy stuff from. But instead of being an outsider that only occasionally chats up the locals, you can join the town council to start making important decisions for Riverside's survival.

The Last Farm arrived just recently on Steam Early Access, and although the devs don't have an expected date for when it'll leave early access, they do plan to have regular updates that expand on The Last Farm's mechanics and features. The latest update has some UI improvements, the ability to genetically analyzer plants and animals, and the ability to sell all items to stores regardless of what that item is.

Grab The Last Farm on Steam for $18.99 USD.
