The Last of Us Part 1 officially reveals Joel's canon age for the first time in the series, thanks to an updated texture on his passport.

Just a few days ago, The Last of Us Part 1 finally released, giving fans of the series another chance to replay the game with much higher detail. As we reported yesterday, Naughty Dog has made a lot of small adjustments and put in a lot of small details, which fans have slowly been noticing over the past few days.

As pointed out by Redditor Chopperz19 on the Last of Us subreddit, Joel's FEDRA ID, which he shows to a guard alongside Tess in the game's first chapter is now completely textured in high detail, which means that the player can see his official date of birth and age. Although we know his birthday thanks to Outbreak Day officially being dated as September 26 and linking to the game's opening cutscene, this makes it the first time that we've concretely known how old he is in the series.

If you use photo mode when Joel is handing over the passport, you can now zoom in to see every detail, whereas before it was blurry and didn't actually contain any information about the character. According to the passport, Joel was born on September 26, 1981, which makes him 52 years old during the events of The Last of Us Part 1, which takes place in 2033. From that, we can also figure out that Joel is 57 in The Last of Us Part 2, as that takes place in 2038, five years after the original game.

Before this, we didn't know the exact year that Joel was born and only had an estimation of how old he was based on context from within The Last of Us and some small bits of information released by Naughty Dog over the years. Thankfully, we now have a more concrete date and can officially figure out some of the smaller details on the timeline. The FEDRA ID also reconfirms that Joel was born in Arlington, Texas.
