Fans of The Last of Us will have to wait a bit longer than expected for the upcoming TV show as HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys has confirmed that it will premiere in 2023 rather than 2022.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Bloys explains that shooting in Canada is still ongoing for The Last of Us and not to expect the show until 2023. Bloys doesn't give an estimated time for when shooting will finish - nor a release window in 2023 for when the series will premiere - but a rumor that circulated back in 2021 suggested that shooting would be complete by June 2022 barring any delays.

"I have seen some early episodes and I'm very excited,” explains Bloys. "What I've seen looks amazing, so I’m excited for it, but it will not be in 22."

Last of Us

News surrounding the premiere date of The Last Of Us has been a little all over the place in recent months, with high-profile people involved like Ellie actor Bella Ramsey hinting that the show would air at some point in 2022. Casey Bloys seems pretty certain the show will air next year, so that's pretty much confirmed now, but the amount of people involved that teased a 2022 premiere could imply that the show has undergone an unexpected delay or two behind the scenes.

As for what the show will be about, we know that it will be a retelling of the story of the original game, with Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann directing part of the first season. The show will be ten episodes long and could possibly include an adaptation of The Last Of Us' Left Behind DLC. Other than that, we've only had a few set photos to go on, with everyone involved in the show keeping a pretty tight lid on any further details. At least we have the game to tide us over until next year.
