The Myst Documentary has launched its crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, with an end goal of 200,000 USD by August 13th, 2020. The purpose of the documentary is to chronicle how Rand and Robyn Miller came to create the video game Myst, and its impact on the world of art and immersive entertainment.

The Myst Documentary Kickstarter campaign was created by Philip Shane, a Brooklyn, NY documentary filmmaker with 30 plus years of experience. Shane has previously created, produced, and edited such notable documentaries as "Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey," "Einstein," "Martin Luther King: Searching For The Promised Land," and "The Beatles Revolution."

Myst is a single-player first-person puzzle adventure video game designed by Rand and Robyn Miller, designed by Cyan, Inc., and published by Broderbund in 1993. Back when computer video games were still in its infancy, Myst pioneered many of the story innovations and game mechanics that have helped make video games what they are today. The Myst Documentary aims to cover in detail the Miller brothers, how they created Myst, and why, almost 30 years later, the game is still revered in the video game world, and what its legacy is and may yet be.

Even though The Myst Documentary is currently in the pre-production phase, Shane has already completed some preliminary filming. According to the Kickstarter page, additional funding is needed “to complete the primary filming required before it can be turned into a concise, entertaining cinematic story.” Shane and his documentary team want to fully explore all the archival materials they can, including “videos, articles, photos, early computer programs and hardware, radio interviews” and anything else within reach.

Shane’s path to achieving his goals centers on two filming objectives: The Origin Story, capturing the Miller family origins, and how they lead into the making of Myst and Riven; and The Present Eras, presenting the new games and new technologies being developed and used at Cyan, Inc. now. If all goes as planned and hoped for, Shane expects The Myst Documentary to be finished and released by the end of 2022.
