Now that The Outer Worlds has been confirmed as a critical and commercial success, cautious consumers who were waiting to see if the game was worth picking up can rest easy and jump right in. As the game is made by industry veterans of the Fallout series, some may be expecting a long, massive adventure. So how long does it really take to complete The Outer Worlds?

Like with all RPG type games, the answer will largely depend on what a player considers necessary to “complete” a game. Strictly speaking, players can rush through all the main quests, bypassing every extra room and side quest to be done in about 24 hours. This entails only focusing on the main objectives and ignoring some great content, and is not exactly realistic for how most players will choose to play the game because the side quests are fantastic and well worth the effort to complete.

Choosing to do some or most of the side quests is how most players will choose to proceed, especially for those who want to learn everything about the world. It is easy to become lost in the side quests as the worldbuilding of the colony is so well done, and enjoyable in its ridiculousness.

Doing everything this way will bump up the play time to around 45 hours, meaning that half of the playtime is on the main quest, and half on side quests. From here, one could add a few more hours if they choose to examine every bit of every room in the game in search of secret, Easter eggs, and rewards. Completionists will go this route with a focus on also reading every single terminal to learn everything they can.

Like many RPG games, there is also the question of playstyle that dictates how to experience the game. Playing the game as a stealth character is completely different than one who barges in and calling attention to themselves. Both are great ways to play and can provide a solid second play through for those who want to experience everything the game has to offer without committing to exploring every space on the first attempt.

Players will soon have the option to play the game on the go as well, as a recent investor call has revealed that the game will be released for the Nintendo Switch in early 2020. Now is a great time to jump in and experience The Outer Worlds, but perhaps some may want to wait to play it on their Switch consoles in a few short months.
