You can only carry up to three items at a time, not including your Rig. The best ones to have will depend on any other additional abilities you may have unlocked.

As a beginner, you should always have access to three main items: health, batteries, and an antidote. Starting out, you are bound to lose your sanity a bunch to the enemy who releases gas and from being stuck in traps. Having an antidote on hand or knowing where you last saw one is important.

Health is a no-brainer. You will always need to heal with the many enemies sent after you. You can even heal yourself through psychosis as the Skinner Man chases you.

Batteries are necessary because while you can still use your night vision goggles on zero battery, there will be a huge diminish in brightness.

8 Don't Spend Too Long In A Trial

The longer you stay in a trial, the greater amount of enemies that get released. What looks like elevator doors around the map are spawn points for enemies.

When you enter a trial for the first time, you will have to take a while because you are learning the map and the objective. The second or third time around, don't waste any time so that enemies don't excessively spawn.

The harder the mode, the more enemies will spawn at a quicker rate. You can replay the same trial over again but with different objectives. These harder challenges will sometimes make enemies spawn as soon as you enter. You can still speed run the objective to avoid even more spawns, in this case.

You may have noticed at the beginning of the Police Station Program 1 trial, characters standing off to the side are minding their business. Once you get close to them, they will punch you and take some health.

If you hear heavy breathing, start walking slowly and pay attention to your surroundings. Heavy breathing will indicate that there is a Pouncer hiding in a nearby hiding spot. You don't have to interact with said hiding spot; just going near them will warrant the Pouncer's attack. They will jump on you and hit you a few times before running away.

Screamers are similar to Pouncers. They will have labored breathing in a dark corner where you probably won't see them. Once you get close enough to them, they will scream. This scream will not only alert nearby enemies but will stop you from being able to move or use items until they are done screaming.
