The Outlast Trials can be very challenging, especially when you don't have a full party of friends. The longer you are in a trial, the more enemies will be released. That is why it is important to level up your character enough to unlock special abilities.

Rigs are special items that can be purchased and upgraded. They will help you and your teammates survive longer and prevail against the odds. You will need more to survive than the items you can pick up in trials. Every trial gets harder and harder. This guide will explain what rigs are and how you can unlock them.

Rigs can be purchased from Noakes, the engineer, while you are in the main lobby or cell block. You cannot interact with Noakes or buy Rigs until you are Level 2.

Once you are Level 2, you can use special green tokens to purchase and upgrade Rigs.

Each time you level up, you will earn a green token that can be used to purchase a Rig or upgrade one that you currently own.

These green tokens are also used to purchase "prescriptions" from the pharmacist in the cell block.

Next to Noakes, there will be four television screens. These are showcase tutorials about each available Rig. When you speak to Noakes, you may also hover over each Rig option to read what they do.

Once you purchase a Rig, you will need to equip it to your loadout. Otherwise, you will not be able to use it in a trial.

To equip a Rig into your loadout, press TAB or head to the terminal in the foyer. Once in the terminal menu, select the Loadout tab and then select your Rig.

How To Use Rigs

You can only equip one Rig. You may purchase them all and switch between them, but you can only use one in a trial. To use a Rig, you can either press R or scroll through your items. Your Rig will be the last item in your inventory.

To enable the Rigs ability, you just need to press Right Click like you would to use any other item in the game. Once you use your ability in a trial, it will be on cooldown. This cooldown can be pretty brutal if there are tons of enemies around you or time is of the essence.

You can find Rig Rechargers throughout trials that you can loot and use.

They can be found in toolboxes or any other place where you find regular items.

There are only four types of Rigs to choose from. If you are playing with friends or in a group, each person should use a different Rig.

You can see what Rig someone in your party has equipped by the icon next to their username.

Rig

Description

Stun

"Powerful throwing device that emits an electric shock. It temporarily stuns and disorients enemies."

Blind

"A landmine that, once triggered by the enemy, will emit a temporarily blinding explosion of smoke."

Heal

"An aerosol gas that replenishes your health, along with the health of friends nearby."

X-RAY

"Tactical enhancement to see through walls, revealing the location of enemies."

Rigs can be further upgraded for additional green tokens. These upgrades will enhance the ability. For example, the second upgrade for the Heal Rig expands the radius of healing gas. This makes it easier to heal your party members, especially if they are running away in fear.

There will be eight upgrade levels for each Rig. The last couple of upgrades will add additional abilities. For example, the fifth Heal Rig upgrade makes the healing gas also cure psychosis.
