We’ve got less than a week until The Owl House returns with the premiere of season two’s second half. Fair warning: I will be an insufferable gay disaster for the next several weeks as new episodes drop and narrative revelations emerge. My colleagues love me. [Editor’s Note: No].
I’m crossing my fingers for plenty of cute Lumity moments alongside development for all of my favourite characters. With the first episode airing this Saturday, we don’t have long to wait. Following Dana Terrace’s charity stream this weekend that managed to raise over $70,000 for the Zebra Coalition, a selection of new screenshots have been released showcasing a number of familiar faces and unknown events.
The fandom is already poring over every single detail found in a handful of screenshots and a couple of short clips, while there’s also a selection of episode titles to dig into that provide more clues than we might be expecting. Because I am somehow paid to write about gay cartoons I love, it’s time for both a recap and to delve into what’s to come.
The Owl House Season 2 Recap - Where Are We At?
With the shortened third season and sudden cancellation, The Owl House has an awful lot of ground to cover with its remaining episodes and specials. Luz needs to return home, deepen her relationship with Amity, stop Emperor Belos, help Hunter with his inevitable redemption arc and goodness knows what else in roughly six hours of runtime.
Dana Terrace said in her recent stream that Disney’s decision to cut the show short has resulted in some hard decisions being made in terms of narrative and characters. Certain arcs will see a full conclusion, while others might be left on the cutting room floor out of necessity. However, she also says that the current reality allowed them to make creative decisions that have led to some really exciting places. It’s one big experiment.
The midseason finale ‘Yesterday’s Lie’ saw the destruction of Luz’s homemade portal and a tearful separation from her mother. She will need to deal with the consequences of those actions while also furthering her pursuit to link the human and demon realms in a way that makes travel between them possible once again. If she can’t, there will be trouble.
Meanwhile, Eda has managed to get her curse under control and transform into a sexy harpy lady, King is beginning to uncover his true heritage, and Hooty is, well, Hooty. Lilith is currently staying with her mother, since without magical powers she needs to find a new purpose. I won’t run down every single character right now, but you get the idea.
The Owl House Season 2 Episode Titles - What Could They Mean?
Several episode titles for Season 2B have already emerged online, some of which are outfitted with brief descriptions that provide clues as to what their individual narratives entail.
As the show has progressed The Owl House has become more and more serialised, with each episode building upon an overarching story instead of featuring isolated shenanigans. There will likely still be plenty of those though, so don’t worry if you’re after some cute adventures alongside all the angst. Here’s all of them we know thus far:
Follies At The Coven Day Parade - In the aftermath of her trip home, Luz takes on daring rescue missions during the Coven Day parade.
Elsewhere and Elsewhen - Luz is desperate for more information about Philip Wittebane, the creator of the portal door. With Lilith’s help, she sets off on a journey for the ages.
Any Sport in a Storm - Hunter goes undercover at Hexside for his most important mission yet. Willow becomes determined to succeed at an exciting new sport.
Okay, this is where the official descriptions end and my terrible ramblings begin, so please bear with me.
Reaching Out - Given Luz’s continued mission to return home, I wouldn’t be surprised if this title hints at another attempt to communicate with her mother in the human realm. It could involve this, or perhaps Luz and Amity are forced to seek out help from unexpected places, whether it be Hunter, Amity’s parents, or an entirely new face.
Them’s The Brakes, Kid - This title sounds like a line of dialogue from Eda, as either a declaration of tough love towards Luz or a touching way to make her feel better about a potential problem. She’s in the midst of her first relationship all while learning magic in a mysterious new world, so this could honestly refer to anything.
Hollow Mind - BRAINWASHING! Well, that’s what pops into my head when I think about minds of the hollow variety. My money is on this being about Hunter. The character works under Emperor Belos, but has made it increasingly clear that his allegiances aren’t always concrete. He has a good heart, and there’s a chance this will result in Belos and company taking control of his mind to hurt Luz and those closest to her. Anything to get the job done.
Edge of the World - While earlier episode titles seemed all happy and wholesome, these last few have been pretty damn heavy. Not only does it sound like a really bleak level from Kingdom Hearts, I imagine this episode will see our ensemble cast journey to places they’ve never seen before to make some very tough decisions. Please don’t kill anyone...
The Owl House Season 2 Screenshots - Let’s Take A Closer Look
Dana Terrace released four new screenshots that weren’t seen in the trailer. They’re gay, dramatic, and tease a few moments that I will try my best to link to their respective episodes.
We got some gay girls up in here. Luz and Amity are looking rather downtrodden in this screenshot, leaning on another in the midst of a conversation where they’re likely trying to figure out the solution to a taxing problem. I can see this falling in the early minutes of ‘Follies At The Coven Day Parade’ or ‘Any Sport in a Storm’ given Luz will absolutely turn to her girlfriend for guidance on what to do next and for a source of comfort.
Lilith Clawthorne has really turned over a new leaf since being sacked by her fascist boss and losing all their magical powers. She’s bright, bubbly, and such a nerd. Here she is excitedly showing off a poster of balusters - a very thrilling subject, obviously.
This has got to be from ‘Elsewhere and Elsewhen’ which follows Luz and Lilith embarking on a small escapade together. Our heroine will likely turn up and be greeted by her surrogate Auntie will all manner of excitement, which includes christening her with a bunch of ultimately useless magical knowledge. We still love her though.
Hunter and Luz are staring each other down in this screenshot in a corridor filled with portraits that appear to be running down the history of Emperor Belos and his Coven. I can see the overconfident teenager trying to convince Luz that he’s on the winning side, and there’s a reason why he’s decided to learn magic under such corrupt leadership.
Luz isn’t taking any of his nonsense, and I can see her walking away or forming an uneasy alliance depending on the circumstances. She’s also wearing Eda’s varsity jacket, which makes me believe this moment comes from the closing moments of ‘Any Sport in a Storm’ given he will likely be infiltrating Hexside for something or someone. Maybe he wanted to attract Luz, bringing her to this place before said conversation unfolds.
This cool kid in the leather jacket/Coven hood combo is either Hunter or a new character altogether (maybe the one teased in Dana’s stream?) riding a motorcycle and sitting back like he’s the coolest kid in the world. King certainly doesn’t seem to recognise him judging by such a neutral expression, so I reckon there is more to this character than meets the eye. As for the episode it possibly stems from, I’ll be real I’ve got no idea for this one.
The Owl House Season 2 Trailer - How Does It Look?
Full trailers for the second half of a season aren’t especially common for Disney shows like The Owl House, but we do have a brief 30-second teaser to analyse.
Many of the screenshots and episode titles we touched on above can be gleaned from the footage, whether it be Hunter being dragged by what appears to be Willow’s plant magic, Luz hanging out with Lilith, or Eda once again taking on her monster form.
It’s all a bunch of gorgeous imagery and subtle shots that aren’t aiming to give much away, which is probably what the fandom prefers if I’m being totally honest.
