In the March update to The Sims 4, we were finally given the gift of bunk beds. The unexpected but much-desired addition comes in the form of two designs, one wooden and one metal. Each bunk also contains a loft bed version that just contains the top bunk and the ladder with free space underneath.

Naturally, this has led to builders, in particular, wanting to know just what we can do with these new bunks. Can you add toddler beds? double beds? desks? wardrobes? We take a look at how bunk beds currently function and exactly what you can create.

Updated September 7, 2021, By Helen Ashcroft: Bunk Beds have since been updated and now have more flexibility than ever before. With the requirement to cheat in order to place items under beds removed, we have updated this article to reflect the current flexibility in the game and highlight the different bunk bed options for those with base game as well as those with extra packs.

What Bunk Beds Can You Find In The Sims 4?

There are now six different bunk beds in The Sims 4, although only two of these are in the base game. The top two beds in the image above are those you can find in the base game. One of these is metal and has both black and white frame options matching the metal framed single bed. The other is wooden and matches the mod pod sleeper and teen dreams beds.

The four other designs are from Dream Home Decorator and reflect different aesthetics. There's a panel based modern design and a wooden design similar to the base game one but with different swatches and wood colors. The other two designs are both wooden-framed with one using triangles for a unique pattern on the headboard, while the other has a triangular top and canvas sides that look like they would roll down.

The bunk bed functionality is the same with all bunk beds in the game.

Can Toddlers Sleep In Bunk Beds?

This room uses the standard metal-framed bunk bed available in the base game. There is also a version with the bottom bunk entirely removed, which is listed as a separate item in the build and buy catalog. The top bunk is tied to the ladder but the bottom bed is separate, no matter which version you pull form the catalog. This means you can change out the swatch on the bottom bed or replace it with another single bed or even a toddler bed.

This bed combination doesn't use any cheats and is fully functional. The toddler bed is entirely usable, as is the top bunk. However, only children or older can climb the ladder so bunk beds are currently only possible for a toddler and child combination or two children. If you have toddler twins you'll need to wait until they age up before moving them into bunks, something that's also true in real life.

What Can Be Placed Underneath Bunk Beds?

You can now place almost any item underneath a bunk bed and it will snap into place. Anything that snaps to the space underneath the loft bed version of a bunk will be fully functional.

The image above shows several combinations of items and beds, all using the base game wooden bunk. You'll notice that many of these items perfectly match the bed swatches, making mixing and matching furniture much easier than you may expect.

Here are a few ideas for things which fit underneath the bunks:

  • A single bed placed at a right angle
  • A sofa, chair or bean bag
  • A desk
  • A chest of drawers or dresser
  • A double bed
  • A bookcase

Any of these combinations will fit underneath the loft bed version of any bunk in the game. You can also place sofas, desks or beds at a right angle to change up the design to fit your space.

Are There Any Restrictions On Bunk Beds?

There are a few small restrictions on bunk beds, although several of these can be overcome with the use of the move objects cheat.

  • You can put single-space desks, chairs and small dressers underneath the bunkbed but they will centralize meaning you cannot place another one tile item next to them.
  • You cannot add any item wider than two-spaces.
  • The vast majority of sofas, dressers, bookcases and desks will fit but other two-space items are more variable.
  • You cannot add anything taller than the top bunk.

Most of these restrictions are common sense, meaning bunk beds are now more flexible than ever before. So why not see what you can design for your Sims?
