In The Sims 4 Cottage Living canning is back, although this time you can use your regular stove to preserve your food. No need to buy a bulky canning station as we've seen in the past, simply use your beautiful country kitchen. This means that the skill is accessible to anyone and it's also linked to your cooking skill, so you essentially level both skills at once.

As part of the Cottage Living expansion, Sims can become more self-sufficient, growing and cooking their own foods. Canning ties into this as you can use it to keep the food you've grown fresher for longer. Here's everything you need to know about canning including the recipes, ingredients, and levels required to make each one.

How To Get The Ingredients For Canning In The Sims 4

Sims 4 cottage grocery stall chatting with the vendor

Before you begin you'll need some ingredients to use for canning. There are now several ways to find these. They are:

  • Harvesting fruit and vegetables from the world.
  • Harvesting fruit and vegetables your Sim has grown.
  • Purchasing fruit and vegetables from the Grocery Stall in Finchwick.
  • Purchasing fruit and vegetables from the Flower Stall in Finchwick.
  • Placing an order for a Grocery Delivery using your phone, computer, or randomly, the fridge.
    • Grocery Deliveries will be hand-delivered to your door shortly after the order is made and you'll need to accept the delivery and then put it away.

Groceries sold at the stalls in Finchwick and those available via grocery delivery will change each Sim day. If you want to gain a range of items to grow then checking the delivery selection and purchasing seed packs will give you a decent selection quite quickly. You can also check the recipes and focus on one or two specific recipes per level to minimize how many types of fruit and vegetables you need. Alternatively, you can simply cook any recipe to raise your skill level.

Note: While all the fruits and vegetables you can use in canning can be grown, you'll need to purchase sugar from a shop or grocery delivery.

What Can You Do With Canned Goods in The Sims 4?

Sims 4 cottage eating chocolate from jar

Once you've canned your chosen goods they will last much longer. This means it's a great way to preserve extra vegetables and fruit you may have from your garden. However, you don't just have to eat them, Here's everything you can do with them:

  • Eat them
  • Pack them into a picnic basket
  • Gift them to other Sims
  • Sell them at the Garden Stall
  • Sell them at the Grocery Stall
  • Sell them in your inventory

All sale prices are the same, regardless of the way you choose to sell. In terms of gifting and eating, there are all kinds of buffs attached to canned goods. Sims can get happy or sad buffs, depending on their tastes. For example, eating jam can make a sim feel happy but eating a spoonful of mayonnaise can make them question their actions. You can even eat chocolate syrup straight from the jar which feels very satisfying. There are also different interactions relating to gifting preserves to other Sims.

We recommend firing up the stove and making a selection of jams before testing the response you get from other people. The reactions are quite varied!
