A Redditor has made “Hide The Pain” Harold in The Sims so he can go through conversations in Simlish with a slightly pained expression.
Making real people in The Sims is nothing new. Making real people who have been turned into memes as virtual people is slightly new, and Harold is definitely new to the world of Sims.
If you’re too young to know who Harold is, count yourself lucky. However, if so, KnowYourMeme will get you up to speed. Harold, or Maurice as he is sometimes referred to, is the nickname given to a stock photo model whose facial expression made it look like he was trying to suppress pain or discomfort, thus the name “Hide The Pain Harold.”
Harold's notoriety grew in 2011 when a Facebook page popped up dedicated to his fictional exploits. Users would submit stock photos of Harold with hilarious captions, many of which were taken from a 4chan thread. That same thread would eventually be made into a YouTube video in 2014.
The actual, real person behind the meme is a retired Hungarian engineer named András Arató. Arató talked about how he became an internet celebrity at age 73 in a TEDx talk earlier this year. Apparently, he was spotted by a professional photographer after posting his vacation photos, and after that made about 100 stock photos.
At first, Arató was confused and appalled by his meme-status, but he eventually came to accept and even appreciate it.
And now he’s immortalized in Sim form. As if being a meme wasn’t enough.
We have Redditor CichaelMlififord to thank for bringing Sim Harold to life. He is basically the same as real-life Harold, but he doesn’t quite have that same slightly-pained expression. We Guess The Sims 4 can’t handle nuanced facial expressions quite yet. Maybe technology will have improved to that point in The Sims 5. We live in hope.
Who should be immortalized in Sim form next? Tiny Keanu Reeves? The "Guess I'll Die" Guy?
