Sul Sul! If you are an avid Sims fan, you can probably recognize more than a few phrases that your simulated friends use. Even if you feel that you are a Simlish expert and can speak Simlish fluently, there is quite possibly a few things about the made up gibberish language that might just surprise you.

Stick around and scroll down to discover 10 facts about Simlish that most people don't know!

10 The Sims Was Not The First Game To Use Simlish

Simlish was originally created for Sim Copter which released in 1996. Of course, Will Wright was working on The Sims as well, so it seems reasonable that the language would begin around the time that Sim Copter was released. If you listen to the Sim Copter Sims, you will hear a very primitive form of Simlish. It would take over a decade for it to evolve into the modern Simlish we know today.

9 Simlish Didn't Begin As Simlish

Originally Maxis considered basing Simlish loosely off of the Navajo language. Unfortunately, with a lack of Navajo voice actors, Maxis decided to move on and find other alternatives. Will Wright knew that he did not want players to tire of hearing Sims speaking so he decided to create a more imaginative language and began developing Simlish. Simlish was based more on gibberish and was pleasant to listen to.

Players enjoyed it so much that a simple search of "simlish" on Google can yield tons of fan created dictionaries and even Simlish translators.

8 Mortimer And Bella, The Originals

The original voices of The Sims characters, including the beloved Mortimer and Bella, were provided by Stephen Kearin and Gerri Lawlor. The comedic pair also helped to co-create Simlish.  The two Simlish voice actors made the process of language creation an enjoyable experience for Maxis and for those who would go on to play The Sims.

After creating Simlish, Stephen Kearin lent his vocal skills to movies such as Kung Fu Panda and Megamind and even acted in various movies and shows, his most recent role being Sergeant Stephen Geller in the series Wayne.  Sadly, after an amazing career in improv, acting, dancing, and even becoming an advocate for the homeless, Gerri Lawlor passed on January 28th, 2019.

7 Simlish Is Not A Real Language

While ficitional languages like Klingon and Dothraki have the ability to be learned, spoken, and even written by fans, Simlish does not have that ability. Simlish has no grammar or syntax. Any translations you find for Simlish words are also unofficial, however Maxis has very recently been sharing official translations for a few Simlish words and phrases.

6 Alexa Play The Sims

As of January, 2019, The Sims fans can experience The Sims through Amazon's Alexa. No, you can't actually play the game, but you can play trivia games, listen to The Sims music, and learn more about the game.

Along with the new Alexa partnership, The Sims 4 also released their own digital version of Alexa called Lin-Z. If your Sim can become friends with Lin-Z, you can be rewarded with Simlish phrases to say to Alexa.

5 Simlish Songs

Although it's said that it wasn't until The Sims 2 that the game began having songs from our actual world translated into Simlish, there is a song in The Sims: Unleashed that definitely could be the first song to be translated. A group called Zydeco Flames has a song called Don't Worry that sounds very much like Down By The River on the soundtrack for The Sims: Unleashed. Seeing as how Zydeco Flames wrote the music for the game pack, I highly doubt that it's a coincidence.

4 Simlish Music Videos

With real world artists creating Simlish versions of popular songs, Maxis also created music videos to accompany the song releases. On their YouTube channel, under playlists, you can find a playlist called The Sims Fun Videos which contains videos to songs such as Hot n Cold by Katy Perry and Smile by Lily Allen. Of course, the enormous The Sims community has created many, many more videos to popular Simlish songs that are definitely worth checking out.

3 Non-Simlish

While the user interface of The Sims games is clearly not in Simlish (thank goodness), there are some other things that are not in Simlish found in the game. In The Sims 2, when a Sim child sits on a phone book to play chess, random alphabetical letters are written on it as well as some Simlish.

In The Sims 2: University, there's a noticeboard posted that clearly says Open House on it. The license plate on the spaceship in The Sims 2 is also written not in Simlish and spells out anm8er. Perhaps it was an oversight, but perhaps it was one of many fun easter eggs that the team often hides in their games.

2 Simlish Alphabet

Though it is not officially a language, there is an alphabet for The Sims unique language. Before releasing The Sims 4, an article written completely in Simlish was posted on the official The Sims website. The post was meant to be decoded, much like a cryptogram, in which a secret message from the team could be discovered.  Once it was decoded, a message which stated just how much the team appreciated it's fans (along with some important dates to look forward to) was listed. The important dates were linked to announcements about The Sims 4.

1 Simlish In Other Games

As the Simlish language grew, so did the use of it in other games. Simlish can be heard in Spore, SimSocieties, SimCity 4 and 5. It can even be heard in The Sims Medieval, though Sims speak a more elegant version, much like Old English. Simlish has definitely become a useful and enjoyable language for the series, one that is even appreciated in other games as well. Until next time, Dag Dag.
