Nina Dobrev is a well-known star from the CW’s popular series, The Vampire Diaries. Nina played a character known as Elena Gilbert for six years before calling it quits. Before Nina was Elena, she played in other roles that helped build her career to what it is today. The Bulgarian-Canadian actress has stolen many hearts, and won a couple of awards along the way. She’s won four People’s Choice Awards, as well as six Teen Choice Awards.
Dobrev has always come off as a free spirit, wanting to try different things and not stay in the same place for too long. That’s exactly what she did when her contract for The Vampire Diaries came to an end. After the six-year contract expired at the end of the sixth season, Dobrev ended her journey with her co-stars. Expressing that it was time for her to move on and explore other things. So, her The Vampire Diaries family respectfully continued on without her.
Without looking back, Dobrev dipped back into the indie film industry. Returning back to what she loves. Starring in films as such as The Final Girls and the upcoming Arrivals. You might think that Dobrev isn’t up to much since departing The Vampire Diaries, but it’s the exact opposite. She has a lot on her plate with four movies in pre-production this year alone. While you wait for her movies to hit the screen, here are some little-known facts about the actress.
25 Dated Her Co-star
It is no secret that Nina has dated her former co-stars in the past. Two of the biggest ones have been, her Degrassi co-star Daniel Clark and the relationship that turned heads everywhere, Ian Somerhalder. The steamy romance wasn’t just on camera, but off camera as well. Allegedly they started dating back in 2010. Two years after The Vampire Diaries premiered. Once the couple came out, making things official, people got really excited for them.
They were seen never too far from each other.
They’ve been spotted at Coachella, on vacation, and of course together on the red carpet. Unfortunately, things came to an end in 2013. Allegedly Somerhalder was on the marriage track, but Nina wasn’t exactly ready for that just yet. Nina did say in an ENews interview back in 2017, that the two are still very good friends. Even now that Somerhalder is happily married.
24 Loves her Famous Friends
You can’t come this far in a career without having a support system. Celebrity or not, you need friends to help you get through the tough times. Nina definitely has a great support system. She even has a support system from her exes. Nina has some pretty awesome famous friends including Ian Somerhalder’s wife Nikki Reed. She’s also friends with Anna Kendrick, Jessica Szohr, Kat Graham, JulianneHough who is Nina’s BFF, and Ian Somerhalder himself.
Talk about having an all-star group of friends. Nina is not shy showing her beautiful friends all of the love that she can muster. From snapping photos of them with beautiful captions and awesome angles, to surprising them on their birthday. Her Instagram just isn’t used for herself, but she uses it to show her fans just how much her friends mean to her.
23 Music Lover
Who doesn’t love music right? Not only does Nina love independent films, but she also loves independent music. She’s been spotted at Coachella on more than one occasion enjoying the music that the festival has to offer.
She also likes mainstream music as well. She told the examiner, “My playlists are all over the place, I listen to all different kinds of music. I like to mix it up. I like musicals so therefore I have Glee on here, and Spring Awakening. I have Hedley, which is a Canadian band, Kings of Leon, Katy Perry, The Fray, Coldplay, Carrie Underwood, P!NK. Just tons.” It's obvious from that ensemble that she has incredibly diverse tastes to tap into.
22 Loves Playing Practical Jokes
Is it a real friendship if you can’t play a practical joke on each other? Not saying all the time but playing jokes on friends is what makes friendships great. Nina is a total jokester. She’s posted videos on her Instagram in the past of her playing pranks on her friends. She even likes to play little harmless pranks on her fans and with the media.
She once posted on her Twitter, “I’m getting married!!!!!!”
Fans went crazy, they went ballistic before they even clicked on the tweet. After they did they saw a picture of Nina cuddling and bottle feeding a baby tiger. It may not be an actual marriage, but we can’t blame the girl for wanting to spend the rest of her life with such a cute animal, if they weren’t wild animals we would do the same.
21 Skyped One Of Her Auditions
Being an actress can be hectic and leave you with little to no time to do anything else. The Perks of Being a Wallflower was a great book and the movie actually turned out well. Before it went into production. Nina read and fell in love with the script. She told MTV, that she wanted to be a part of the movie. Unfortunately, Nina ran into a snag when she couldn’t make the audition in Toronto because she was in Atlanta filming The Vampire Diaries.
“I was in between takes, and I kind of had to be like, 'Guys, I'm going to go to the bathroom. I just have to pee for five minutes.' And then I went and Skyped and auditioned and there was a moment definitely a moment that we both knew this was a right fit and it worked."
20 Nina Is Not Her Real Name
Sometimes celebrities change their name, or they give themselves an alias once they enter the acting world.
Nina didn’t exactly change her name but its short for, Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva.
(Whoa that’s a mouth full). Sounds like royalty. To avoid the cringing side effects of having a long name and people getting it wrong. Nina said that shorting it to Nina was just easier.
Nikolina is a beautiful name and if you say it right, it actually does roll off the tongue nicely. Are we sure that Nina isn’t actually a secret princess escaping her old life to lead the life as an actress? Ok, so my headcanon is off the rails.
19 Cat Obsessed
Everyone has an animal that they love. One of Nina’s favorite animals is a cat. She is a total cat lover. No, she’s not a crazy cat lady and she prefers the term cat women instead, saying cat lady makes her sound like she’s really old. She even poses with her cat on her Instagram, showing Lynx complete love. She also goes as far as posing in a cat t-shirt. She puts cats in cute outfits sometimes too. Including, a cat that she dressed up in a Santa costume. Sure, the cat didn’t look very amused, but it sure was cute.
She loves dressing up in cat costume too. In 2014, she threw a jungle themed birthday party for herself and dressed up as a tiger
18 Bff’s With Her Mom
Mother-daughter relationships are super cute. Nina is very close with her mother, Michaela Dobrev. They’ve been photographed shopping together and they just look completely adorable. They’ve posed together in a Got Milk campaign back in 2012.
The campaign was called “Like her, Like Me,” it celebrated the power of positive influence. Of course, it serves to advertise a product, but it also promotes meaningful relationships and strong bonds of positivity. How cute is that? Having such a strong relationship with her mom is great. There was once a little rumor that Nina’s mother was the one who got Nina and Ian back after they took a break. I guess she really adored Ian, and felt that the two were great together. We’re all here for sweet mother-daughter relationships.
17 She Loves People
People love Nina, and for good reason, because she loves the people right back. In 2012, she won the People’s choice award for “Favorite TV Drama Actress” When she won the award she dedicated it to her loving loyal fans. Giving a speech that made you feel the love."I honestly wasn't even initially nominated at all. I wasn't on the ballot. They caved in and gave me a nomination, and now I get to take this to Atlanta. Thank you everyone and thank you to the fans. I love you guys.”
It is incredibly sweet for her to take the time out to thank the fans and show them love
She definitely lets them know that without them she wouldn’t be where she is today. When she left The Vampire Diaries, she left a heartfelt goodbye from on set and it made you want to grab those tissues. “It feels like it was just yesterday that I was saying goodbye. And yet two years have passed and here we are again. This is my true final goodbye, as today I shot my last scene of The Vampire Diaries forever.” Whose cutting onions?!
16 The Girl Every Designer Adores
Not only does she have beauty and brains, but she has style. Being famous sure comes with its perks. Famous designers from all over the world want to dress Nina, and who could blame them? She’s stunning. She is literally a designer’s dream. From Donna Karan, D&G, and even Elie Saab. For every event, Nina does a total number on the red carpet and constantly has the cameras flashing. You can check outor her top stunning looks on the red carpet.
Since Nina is now the ambassador for Reebok, maybe she might dabble in fashion and design her own collection of cute workout gear. Whether she does or not is fine. As long as she keeps gracing us with her amazing fashion looks we’ll be totally happy.
15 She Was Discovered
Nina didn’t actually audition to land the role of her dreams. Nina wasn’t necessarily a struggling actress, but like many struggling actors and actresses before her, she did want the big break that will take them to the top. For Nina that happened after she was discovered.
It is incredibly sweet for her to take the time out to thank the fans and show them love.
It’s just like being a model and being discovered randomly for your 'je-ne-sais-quoi,' only this time with a winning smile and acting talent. Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Just think, if Nina was never discovered a totally different actress could have been cast as Elena. Imagine how different that would’ve turned out for the series.
14 Nina Beat Every Actress Who Auditioned For The Vampire Diaries
Gotta love talent. As with most series pilots, there is casting that has to be done before the filming starts. For The Vampire Diaries, there were a ton of actresses that wanted to land the role of Elena. Including Ashlee Simpson. No shade to Ashlee Simpson at all, but The Vampire Diaries would’ve taken a completely different turn were she the one to take on the role.
Picturing Stephan and Damon fighting over Ashlee Simpson would’ve given the show a completely different feel and it probably wouldn’t have lasted as long. Were Ashlee Simpson to get the role, would Jessica Simpson have made a cameo appearance? Good thing Nina out beat every other person who auditioned making a hit show with incredible cast members. This is one of the reasons why we love you Nina.
Nina only spoke English on the set, but in real life, she speaks more than one language. In fact, Nina speaks French and her native language Bulgarian. I don’t know about everyone else, but hearing Nina speak her native language is beautiful.
In fact, you can catch a clip of her on The Late Late show With James Corden speaking in her native tongue. Who taught her the other languages? Did she learn them in school? Did her parents teach her? Whatever the case may be, we’re definitely jealous for sure. This is one of those talents that makes stunning and talented people seem even more awesome. It's like playing an instrument — everyone who can do these things should thank their parents on the spot.
12 Huge Harry Potter Fan
Nothing makes Harry Potter fans happier than seeing an actress they love who also is a Harry Potter fan. Nina is that exact person. Not sure if she read the books or not, but she adores the movies. When she was in Orlando, she made sure that she took a visit to Harry Potter world with her friends.
After landing a role in the Perks of Being a Wallflower, Nina completely geeked out because she was going to work with Emma Watson who is known for her role in Harry Potter as Hermione Granger. She told Entertainment Tonight, "I was really excited and kind of nervous to meet her. I was like, 'You gotta keep your cool. You gotta be normal. She's just a normal girl.” Nina being a total fangirl over Emma Watson is super sweet.
11 Likes To Post Inspirational Quotes On Her Social Media Accounts
People like inspirational quotes. It helps them get through their day, it even makes them feel good as a person. Who would’ve thought that Nina takes the time out to post inspirational quotes on her social media accounts? She uses her Twitter platform to give wonderful words of wisdom from the experts. This is her daily routine.
If you are in need of some wisdom, or just really need some inspiration to get you through the day.

10 Yoga Obsessed
Namaste. Yoga is a great way to get in shape, and clear your mind, making you feel awesome. Did you know that Nina is totally into yoga? She mostly stays fit by doing yoga and jogging. Which she posts on her Instagram account.
She always has photos of herself doing awesome yoga poses. Just recently she became an ambassador for Reebok. If that isn’t inspirational, I don't know what is. Seeing Nina in action makes us want to start dabbling in yoga ourselves. If you ever feel the need to be inspired and to keep going, her Instagram is the perfect place to head over to, to get motivated again. Seriously could Nina really be any more inspirational? Don’t think so.
9 Loves A Good Charity
Celebrities who donate to charities always have a favorite. It takes real class to nonchalantly donate to a meaningful foundation. Nina seriously loves a good charity. Not only is she constantly donating to different organizations, she’s constantly volunteering. Which is totally amazing. Nina uses her fame to spread the word about these local charities encouraging people to donate or help out in any way that they can.
A few of her favorite charities include Project Pink, Hunger Bites, , Communities in Schools, and Feed the Children. People love a person who gets involved in genuinely helping people. Nina is a true philanthropist. When she fulfilled a young cancer survivor's Make-a-Wish Dream with a helicopter tour of Los Angeles, that just tugs at the heartstrings.
8 Participated In Rhythmic Gymnastics
This was definitely a mind-blown moment. Nina does like doing her own stunts as she did in The Return of Xander Cage. Some might have thought she was just another actress who wanted to take a chance at doing her own stunts, but it's not that way at all. When Nina was younger she participated in ballet and jazz classes. She went on to complete rhythmic gymnastics.
In 2005 she took those skills and participated in the Senior World Championships.
Those championships took place in Copenhagen, and Denmark. Nina later competed in the Junior World Championships in Plzen, and the Czech Republic. Does this mean that in the future Nina could continue to do more of her own stunts in future productions? The actress definitely has the skills, and the ability to do so.
7 Doesn’t Like The Idea Of Living Forever
While Nina was acting on The Vampire Diaries, her character Elena started off as just a regular human high school girl dealing with family and friend drama. Things changed a couple of seasons in when Elena was practically forced to become a vampire. This is something that her character protested against constantly. She wanted to stay human, so she could have children and live a normal life.
Playing a vampire on T.V. you get asked the question on whether or not you would want to live forever, if that were ever possible. Nina definitely does not. She expressed that she wasn’t sure if she would want to live forever. That she has a good life and is happy where she currently is. We can’t argue with that. The actress does live a pretty sweet life. Still, the idea of living forever is pretty cool.
6 Born In Sofia Bulgaria
A true Bulgarian beauty. Nina has played an all-American teenager for most of her career and she has been mistaken for being American. People couldn’t be more wrong. Nina was born in Sofia Bulgaria, in 1989. The year she was born the communist regime collapsed, which wasn’t good for Bulgaria.
When Nina turned 2 her parents up and left Bulgaria, leaving their home behind and starting a new one in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She left the home that she never really knew and set roots in a place that became her true home, where she is now a Canadian citizen. Her parents made a tough decision to leave their home behind, but the idea of wanting to give your children a better life makes those tough decisions easy.
5 Her Parents Are An Artist And Computer Scientist
The thing about celebrity parents is sometimes we don’t know too much about them. It’s not that we don’t want to know about them, but celebrity parents tend to stay behind the scenes. Including Nina’s parents. They may not have a career in showbiz, but their careers are actually pretty cool.
Nina’s father works as a computer scientist and her mother is an artist.
Which explains a lot about Nina’s qualities. Her mother is so creative, showing her daughter that creativity is something to embrace. Doesn’t she just have all the luck? Amazing parents with great careers and she has established an amazing career herself. She literally is out here living her best life, without any regrets. The best way to live. We see you Nina.
4 Majored In Sociology
A lot of celebrities have degrees and usually went to college before they made a break in the acting industry, some celebrities didn’t finish college because they found a different career path. Nina is no different. Before she gave up her studies and completely threw herself into acting full-time. Nina studied sociology at Ryerson.
Nina isn’t the only one who decided to major in sociology though, other celebrities have as well such as, Dan Aykroyd. In any event, it doesn't look like Nina has to worry as much about what degree she chose anymore. The Vampire Diaries took care of that for her — with aplomb!
3 Loves Screen Writing
After Nina left The Vampire Diaries, she wanted to jump back into Indie films, which is her first love. When Nina talks about her future plans, part of those plans includes screen writing. She expressed that she wants to take on more meaningful, ambitious movie roles. So, she is trying her hand at screen writing. She told Self, that she would be stepping out of her comfort zone. It’s tough but that’s one of the best parts about change.
We can’t wait to see what Nina does once starts to tackle screenwriting full time, if that happens. Who knows maybe she’ll write something spectacular, that will turn heads and win awards. We know that she is creative, and very smart. Is there anything she can’t do?
2 Starred In Degrassi
If you were a fan of Degrassi: The Next Generation, then you probably recognized Nina from a couple of seasons. Degrassi was a popular Canadian teen show that became a beloved cult favorite. On Degrassi: The Next Generation, Nina played a teen mom named Mia. Trying to balance the life of being a high school student, wanting to lead a normal teen life, and trying to be a mother all at the same time.
Some of the episodes were a little rough to watch, seeing how balancing everything and being so young isn’t actually easy for a teenager, but it all worked out in the end.
1 Has A Love For Horror Movies
90s kids always get asked what their favorite horror movies were growing up. Since there were so many scary movies (some good and some bad), it can be a bit of a daunting question. Nina is no exception to this, she has a list of favorite scary movies herself. She told InStyle, what a few of her favorites were, "I'd have to say Scream, Teaching Mrs. Tingle or I Know What You Did Last Summer."
Ah a girl after my own heart. I Know What You Did Last Summer is for sure a cult favorite. Who didn’t enjoy a movie with teens out on a vacation running into some trouble and trying to figure out how to escape with their lives. Glad that Nina isn’t shy to admit that she enjoys a good horror film good or bad.
