Geralt does not always have a clever way to lift a curse or free an aching soul. Some of the contracts he can take on in The Witcher 3 have him resort to the spiritual equivalent of an amputation instead of antibiotic therapy.

His contract to stop Jenny o' the Woods is one example. The witcher will need to use his skills as he goes through the process of identifying the monster plaguing Midcopse and planning how he will stop it from harming others. This quest is as straightforward as they come with only one outcome, the village being protected from the monster.

How To Start Jenny O' The Woods

A screenshot showing where Midcopse is, where the quest starts.

This contract is accepted at Midcopse, a town that Geralt visits while searching for Ciri in Velen. It is on the town's noticeboard. Reading the contract will start the quest, sending you to the ealdorman.

You will pass through Midcopse during the main quest Hunting A Witch. There's no need to go out of your way to start this contract.

He is not far from the notice board and will elaborate on the contract when Geralt arrives.

Conducting The Interview

Geralt walks towards an old woman pulling weeds from her field as the sun sets.

Once you have negotiated your pay and accepted the contract, Geralt will begin his investigation. He will need to speak to the witness and search the field.

Interviewing The Witness

The quest marker will bring you to an old lady in the south of town. She had seen Jenny o' the Woods and fled before it could attack. She provides a valuable hint to Geralt; the monster is spectral and appears after dark.

Searching The Field

Go to the north of Midcopse to find the field. Geralt will discover two clues at the same spot.

  1. A torn piece of fabric
  2. A set of footsteps leading away from Midcopse

Geralt will follow the footsteps to see where they lead. Make sure to use your Witcher Senses to highlight the footsteps and make it easier to follow along.

He discovers a large bloodstain and an assassin's knife covered with blood at the scene of the crime. Finally, he finds a shallow grave after the bloodstain with a note written by someone called Zula.

There is a deserter camp close to the grave that you should clear out. The bandits surrounding it might interfere with your investigation by attacking you. You also stand to loot their treasure, which is practically reason enough.

Geralt will return to the ealdorman with the note. Their discussion is enough for Geralt to surmise that the monster is Zula, haunting the fields as a nightwraith. With no time to lose, chooses to kill the nightwraith instead of attempting to lift the curse.

How To Defeat Jenny O' The Woods

Geralt swings at a nightwraith at night in The Witcher 3.

You will need to go to a quiet campsite at a popular meeting spot for Midcopse's young lovebirds. There will be a quest marker leading you directly to it, no tracking required.

Remember to meditate before the fight to replenish your alchemical tools.

Once there, interact with the campfire to start a cutscene where Jenny o' the Woods emerges to fight the witcher. This fight can be very difficult, doubly so considering how early the contract is in the game.

In battle, Jenny o' the Woods will use its ethereal nature to be an evasive opponent that relies on speed and surprise to fight.

Melee Attacks

Jenny o' the Woods usually attacks in wide, swinging motions that deal significant damage to Geralt. It is best to dodge backward, away from it. These attacks stun Geralt and can be chained, dealing massive damage in a short window.

Turning Ethereal

The nightwraith will frequently turn intangible, becoming temporarily immune to your attacks. It uses this ability in conjunction with its melee attacks, turning tangible just long enough to hit Geralt. Jenny o' the Woods will have a gray, translucent outline when in this state.

You can force it out of this state by luring it into a Yrden's field or by throwing a Moon Dust bomb at it. Both options will temporarily prevent it from going intangible.

Summoning Clones

On occasion, Jenny o' the Woods will disappear and be replaced by a trio of wraiths. They will drain Geralt's health if he is too close to them, restoring Jenny o' the Woods' own health. This mechanic can undo all the damage you have dealt very quickly. The only mercy is that they have almost no health and can be defeated in a single hit.

You can counter this by rolling away from the clones and firing your crossbow at them. The distance and speed will allow you to defeat all three without restoring any of their health.

It is best to use Tawny Owl to give yourself enough stamina for Yrden and Quen. You will need to stay on your toes and watch it carefully, dodging away before it can hit you. Try to stay patient throughout the fight and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Once you have defeated it, make sure to collect your trophy and return to Midcopse for your reward.
