The Curse Of The Black Sun is a dark and mysterious event that is explored to some extent in The Witcher 3. In reality it’s a dark moment of history that has some terrifying implications if true. The Witcher series of books explores the concept further and many fans are convinced that the Curse of the Black Sun will play a greater role in future video game titles.

For those who are curious about this dark prophesy, where it came from, and what it could mean for the franchise then this list will go over some of those details. Granted it could all change depending on where the developers go with it, but here’s what fans know so far.

10 Meant To Summon Lilit

The purpose of the Curse of the Black Sun is to summon the powerful war goddess Lilit and destroy all of humanity. How this summoning will occur is largely unknown and how Lilit would destroy the world is also a mystery.

Interestingly she is a goddess also associated with eroticism and passion. Many consider lamias and succubi to be her avatars. This could suggest that her method for destroying the world will be through the widespread seduction of men via her and her followers before promptly draining them of their life energy. It’s also been suggested that the destruction could be caused by a lethal STD that acts as a plague. In the end no one really knows.

9 Lilit Was Worshiped By The Wozgor

Lilit was worshiped by one of the early tribes of humans known as the Wozgor. These nomadic humans considered her the goddess of war and worshiped her with blood sacrifices. They believed that their faithful devotion would make them her chosen people and ensure their survival during her apocalypse.

These blood sacrifices drew negative attention from others, such as the Werebbubbs who came to view Lilit as a dragon-like demon. Eventually the Wozgor were all but wiped out by the Nordlings and their cult was either forgotten or melded with others over time.

8 Prophesied By The Mad Eltibald

Eltibald was a mage who was obsessed with the history of older peoples like the Wozgor and studied their ruins. In the necropolises they built as a result of their blood sacrifices he stumbled across the writings related to Lilit’s return and subsequent apocalypse.

Using these ancient texts he made a prophesy regarding her return and the catalyst that would bring this about. This became widely known as the Curse of the Black Sun. His prediction consisted of two parts that would inspire great evil.

7 60 Women Born Under The Black Sun

The first component of the prophesy made by Mad Eltibald was that 60 girls would be born under the Black Sun. This would result in cruelty and evil taking a hold of their hearts and later these sixty women wearing gold crowns would be responsible for her return.

What the ‘cruelty’ that took root in them was unclear. Some interpreted it as nothing more than a behavioral trait, some saw it as a possession by demons, and other saw it as some kind of mutation that would lead to the girls becoming evil.

6 They Would Fill The River Valleys With Blood

The other half of the prophesy stated the 60 women would “fill the river valleys with blood” according to The Last Wish book in the series. What this means is also not stated, though many interpret it to mean that the women would be responsible for war and other bloodshed on a massive scale.

While not stated it’s generally interpreted by fans that this massive bloodshed would somehow lead to the summoning of Lilit. Considering she was worshiped via blood sacrifices it’s possible that massive bloodshed would result in gaining her attention.

5 Stregobor Led The Hunt For The Girls

Worried about the prophesies a number of mages took it upon themselves to prevent the Curse from occurring. Most prominent was the mage Stregobor who collaborated with the Council to learn more about the curse and determine which girls would become the 60 women.

The man was known for his amoral behavior, having cheated Geralt out of payment for killing an Amphisboena for King Idi. As a result him being the lead researcher behind this project lead to some dark occurrences.

4 Cruel Experiments & Isolation

Stregobor determined the best way to find out which girls had the Curse was to conduct experiments on them. He and his followers began performing autopsies on girls that had been killed through various means. He even went so far as to perform vivisections.

The experiments didn’t always prove fruitful in determined who was ‘cursed’ and the process took a long time. To keep the girls out of society and under lock and key there were kept isolated in towers and other locations while they were experimented on.

3 Some Girls Were Found To Have ‘Mutations’

Interestingly a number of girls that were examined were found to have ‘mutations’. What exactly these mutations were is unclear but it is confirmed there was something different about some of the girls being studied.

It could be that the mutations were similar to the mutations Witchers have or that magic users in general possess some form of mutation to make such a feat possible. In either case it became widely accepted that the girls with mutations were the cursed girls.

2 The Girls Became Powerful

Many of the girls were able to escape the torture and either return home or make new names for themselves in distant lands. As a result of the horrors they experienced many of them became more violent and cruel, often killing others for the sheer pleasure or seeking revenge on those who wronged them.

A number of the young women developed extraordinary power. One girl Bernika became the ruler of Talgar, Renfiri ruthlessly hunted down Stegobor for several years before being killed by Geralt, Daidre gained an aura that rendered magic useless in her presence, and many players are familiar with the bandit queen Sylvia/Syanna’s exploits in Blood & Wine.

1 Fulfillment Of The Prophesy?

What’s interesting about the Curse of the Black Sun is that it’s considered by many to be the partially self-fulfilled prophesy of a mad man. There is no apocalypse and Lilit does not exist. This means that the cruelty, torture, and bloodshed was a result of paranoia and nothing more.

Although, it could still be in the process of being fulfilled. These women who have been twisted into dark and cruel individuals now have great power either politically or through magic that could enable them to cause massive devastation. It could even lead to enough bloodshed to summon Lilit accidentally or 60 of the women could band together to summon Lilit to seek revenge on their enemies.
