If you've been watching Netflix's The Witcher, then you've probably had the song, Toss A Coin To Your Witcher, stuck in your head once or twice. The character behind that song is a bard by the name of Jaskier who accompanies Geralt on his adventures, and if you've played The Witcher games or read the books, you might have noticed a striking resemblance between Jaskier and the character, Dandelion. Well, it turns out that they're actually the same person, and the reason why the television show decided to give the character a different name makes more sense than you might think.

In Andrzej Sapkowski's books that inspired both the video game series and the television show, Dandelion's name was originally Jaskier. When translated directly from Polish to English, Jaskier means Buttercup, a name that doesn't quite properly fit the bard's personality. So instead of Buttercup, the translator opted to change Jaskier's name to Dandelion, seeing that it better fit the character.

In Polish,  the word, "jaskier", refers to a flower with yellow petals that was most likely the inspiration for the bard's name, given his vibrant personality. While the name, "Buttercup", doesn't necessarily express that representation, the decision to name the character, "Dandelion", after another yellow-petalled flower, was made. Of course, they could have just left the character's name alone in the English books, but they didn't.

That means that Netflix's The Witcher is actually representing its source material better than both the games and the English books in this regard. That doesn't mean that the show hasn't moved away from its source occasionally though, as an entire origin story involving Yennefer transforming from a disabled woman to the beautiful sorceress that we're all familiar with was added despite it being nowhere to be found in the source material.

It's safe to say that the name change from Dandelion to Jaskier might have confused some of the fans who had previously read the books or played the games, and some might have even considered that there might be two famous bards in the story of Geralt of Rivia, or that Jaskier had been a creation of Netflix's writers. The Witcher actually got this one right though, and naming the character Jaskier allows the show to better represent the original Polish version of the novels.
