Netflix's Witcher TV Show Will Premiere This Fall

The upcoming TV show adaptation of The Witcher that is being developed by Netflix now has a loose release date. The show said to debut near the end of 2019.

According to Variety, Netflix COO Ted Sarandos was asked about the 2019 lineup of shows for the service when he mentioned The Witcher and its current release window.

Well, definitely in the third quarter, we’ve got new episodes and new seasons of some of our most loved and most watched shows on Netflix..." he said. “And then you start seeing later in the fourth quarter some of our bigger film investments coming through like Irishman, like 6 Underground, and also a big new original series that we’re currently shooting in Hungary called The Witcher that is an enormous European IP, very popular game and Book IP, that we think is going to make a really fun global series.”

The Witcher is a series of novels created by Andrzej Sapkowski, which is best-known outside of Poland for the video game adaptations, most notably The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The popularity of the video game series helped The Witcher get picked up by Netflix. There will also likely be a huge Game of Thrones-shaped hole in people’s hearts by the end of the year, which The Witcher can potentially fill.

The Netflix adaptation of The Witcher will star Henry Cavill (who is best-known for playing Superman in the DCEU) as Geralt of Rivia during his first encounter with Ciri and will follow the story of the books instead of the games.

Game of Thrones has proven that adaptations of dark fantasy novels with adult content can be successful and the fact that it's ending this year will likely mean that there will be an audience left behind that is starving for more. The Game of Thrones prequel show is likely still a few years away, as is The Lord of the Rings TV show that is being developed by Amazon. The fact that The Witcher is close to release means that it can swoop in and steal the waiting fantasy audience, which will be made easier by the fact that the show already has the attention of the fans of The Witcher video games.

The Witcher TV show is due to be released on Netflix in late 2019.
