CD Projekt Red has announced it is remaking the game that started it all. The Witcher is being remade in Unreal Engine 5 "from the ground up" by Polish studio Fool's Theory with the help of CD Projekt veterans who worked on The Witcher series.

"The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD Projekt Red. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger," said CDPR studio head Adam Badowski. "Collaborating with Fool’s Theory on the project is just as exciting, as some of the people there have been previously involved in The Witcher games. They know the source material well, they know how much gamers have been looking forward to seeing the remake happen, and they know how to make incredible and ambitious games. And although it will take some time before we’re ready to share more about and from the game, I know it’ll be worth the wait."

Earlier this month, CDPR confirmed The Witcher series is far from dead. A brand-new Witcher trilogy is in the works now alongside two games called Sirius and Canis Majoris. In today's announcement, CDPR confirmed that The Witcher Remake is in fact Canis Majoris, the "story-driven, single player open-world RPG set within The Witcher universe."

Fool's Theory is reportedly headed by ex-Witcher devs, and with access to the source and a robust engine like Unreal Engine 5 underpinning the remake, the hope is that The Witcher Remake won't take as long to develop as a brand-new game. However, CDPR warned that the remake is still in early development and is asking for "patience" from fans "as it will be a while until we start talking about this project in detail."

Meanwhile, Netflix's Witcher Season 3 is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2023, so there's still plenty for Witcher fans to look forward to.
