Tim Schafer has revealed that there are “no plans right now” for Psychonauts 3.

Psychonauts 2 only just released at the tail end of August, but its great critical reception and open-ended conclusion have fans wondering whether a third game in the series could be in the works.

In an interview with TheGamer, Tim Schafer discussed the future of the series, joking about fans who are already asking for a new title, “ “Have you 100 percented the game? You can’t ask for a third one, it took us five years to make and you’re already all done with it.”

Schafer continued, “There are no plans right now for three. No rules about that either, we don’t lock the door on anything. I think the team and I are both looking forward to something completely brand new. We love these characters though, and psychic worlds are easy to expand upon for further adventures, but there’s nothing planned now.”

Considering how long it took Double Fine to make its first sequel with Psychonauts 2, it probably doesn’t come as too much of a surprise that it doesn’t have plans to jump back into another sequel. Schafer did offer some idea of what the studio is working on, “We’ve got a bunch of things that are big. We're just prototyping stuff and we've got some brand new ideas and none of it is anything anyone's ever heard about before.”

One game we can cross off the list of potential Double Fine titles currently in the works is Brutal Legend 2. Schafer expressed that there is some difficulty in making the second game in the series, considering how polarising some of its elements were.

“That's a tricky one. I feel some emotional barriers towards that because I really like the multiplayer aspect and people were so crabby about the RTS elements. I'm like wow, which game do we make? Do we make the game that I want to make or do we make the one the fans are asking for? It’s tricky to solve that problem. My goal is to just play Brutal Legend every Rocktober 13th until the world learns how great the game is.”
