Mega Cat Studios is dedicated to making new games for retro consoles. Not ports, actual physical games that the developers have created from scratch.

Remasters and remakes appear to be the order of the day, especially in the video game world. Later this month, Genesis/SNES Disney classics The Lion King and Aladdin will be re-released on today's consoles. Next year, a remade version of Final Fantasy VII will hit game store shelves. Both titles are among the most highly-anticipated games of the next six months.

As the gamers who enjoyed those titles as children are now at an age where they have their own money to spend, it stands to reason that there's cash to be made in the remaster market. As touched upon above though, those remasters will be released on today's consoles. While it might not sound like a good idea, or even a feasible one, to release new games on 30-year old consoles, Mega Cat Studios is doing exactly that.

That's right, not remakes of old games on new platforms, not ports, but completely new games on cartridges. Yes, we did say cartridges. Mega Cat is in the business of developing and creating new games for classic consoles. In particular, the Sega Genesis. Mega Cat's Zack Manko told Forbes that people would tell him they had never played or even touched a Sega console before. That inspired him and the rest of Mega Cat's developers to try and revive the Genesis.

The trailer above is for Coffee Crisis, a Mega Cat game created for the Genesis. Some of the studio's releases even come in authentic Genesis cases complete with instruction booklet, just like they would have 25 years ago. Some of its games are also released on PC and a few have even made it onto modern-day consoles. However, for a truly authentic experience, you'll want to play them on your Genesis if you still have one.

Mega Cat wants to take its work with the Genesis and the NES even further. It plans to create a game that will allow gamers to play online on retro consoles and is also attempting to figure out a way to harness the Genesis' power so it can utilize 3D graphics without sacrificing in-depth gameplay. If you have a classic console, you can check out a full list of Mega Cat's games on its website.
