Fallout, Skyrim and Portal - the usual suspects are here in this week’s mod round-up. Fans are tired of waiting for a remake of the official Portal game, and have started working on one themselves. We also have an update from the Skyblivion team, giving us another look at the ambitious remaster.

Elsewhere, we have news from Final Fantasy 14’s director. The MMO is set to clamp down on mod use, dishing out suspensions and perma bans to any rule breakers. All of that and more in this week’s mod news round-up.

Portal Fans Are Remaking Original In 2's Updated Engine

It’s probably safe to say that we’re not getting an original Portal remake anytime soon. So instead, the fans are taking it upon themselves, recreating it in Portal 2’s engine. While both games use Source Engine, the sequel actually includes a lot of upgrades, such as improved graphics and lighting. The devs behind the remake are hoping to use the best bits of Portal 2 to recreate the first one, but keep pretty much everything else authentic. They’re also bringing in an all-new co-op mode - the best part of Portal 2.

Elven Weapons Skyblivion

Skyblivion Devs Reveal First Look At Remade Oblivion Elven Set

The Skyblivion team continue to ramp up development, giving us a good look at an elven weapon set this week. The new models look stunning, much improved upon their 2006 designs. Now, they actually look elven in appearance, with much more sophistication and elegance about them. This shows that the team is just as concerned with upgrading all the tiny details as they are with locations such as Bruma and Bravil, putting a shiny new coat of paint on the much-loved RPG.

Fallout Series Vaults New Vegas

Fallout New Vegas "Truce" Mod Lets You Side With Almost Everyone

As much as you try to avoid it, it’s pretty hard to make your way through Fallout: New Vegas without pissing a few factions off. In fact, depending on who you ally with, you’ll have to straight-up eliminate some groups. Thankfully, a new mod lets you introduce some civility to Nevada, allowing you to solve differences diplomatically, and broker new partnerships. Obviously, this doesn’t mean you can make the NCR and Legion hug it out, but you can convince Mr House that the Republic, Brotherhood of Steel and Kings aren’t his enemies, among others. It’s a great way to mix up your next playthrough, and a much less violent method at that.

Fallout Point Lookout Remake

Fallout 4 Modder Recreates 3's Point Lookout DLC

Want to play Fallout 3, but can’t stand its shooting mechanics? The fans have you covered as usual. A modder has recreated the Point Lookout DLC in Fallout 4, allowing you to take a nostalgic trip back to the days of the Capital Wasteland, without the jank. It’s available to download now, even if it isn’t 100% finished. Some of the characters are missing their voice lines, but aside from that, you’re pretty much set. Having been remade from the ground up, you can revisit all of the DLC’s content in a fresh coat of paint, looking and playing far better than the original.

Square Enix Cracks Down On Final Fantasy 14 HUD Mods, Game Director Naoki Yoshida Promises To Improve The UI

And finally, while this isn’t actually a mod, it was too important for us not to mention in our round-up this week. The Final Fantasy 14 players among you better make sure you don’t have any mods installed, even if they are purely cosmetic. Game director Naoki Yoshida has issued a warning to anyone playing with modifications, reaffirming that the punishment will be a suspension or even a permanent ban. This comes as many turned to mods to improve the game’s UI, something which Yoshida actually acknowledged. The director says that official improvements will be made, although he did admit this will “take some time”.
