Last week was a surprisingly packed week for indie releases, and that has apparently bled over into the final week of September. Next month will have plenty of releases that celebrate the spooky season, but there are still plenty of indie titles launching this week that you’ll want to be sure to check out.

Here are our picks for this week in indie games, September 26 - October 2.

NYKRA - September 27 (PC)

NYKRA – from developer ENDESGA – is a short sci-fi story that is driven by its narrative as you explore ancient and abandoned planets as you search for the meaning of your existence. Having been in development for over eight years, the beautiful pixel art alone might make this one worth picking up. NYKRA is available now on PC via Steam.

Steel Assault - September 28 (PC, Switch)

Relive the glory days of the arcade in Steel Assault, from developer Zenovia Interactive. In Steel Assault, you’ll “punch, whip, and zipline your way through a post-apocalyptic America.” No side quests or in-depth storylines in this slice of nostalgia. The action-packed 16-bit platformer comes with speedrunners in mind and can be completed in around an hour or so. Steel Assault is available now on Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.

A Juggler’s Tale - September 29 (PS4, XB1, Switch, PC)

A Juggler’s Tale – from developer kaleidoscube – is definitely the most emotional title of the week. You’ll take on the role of Abby, a young girl who escapes her captive life in search of her freedom, while taking on puzzles in the harsh outside world. What makes this game unique is that all of the characters are marionettes on strings with their story being told by a puppeteer/narrator. A Juggler’s Tale is especially impactful if you’re a parent, so be sure to check it out when it releases on September 29 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

MADNESS: Project Nexus - September 29 (PC)

In need of a run-and-gun beat ‘em up? Look no further than GIBBING TREE, LLC’s MADNESS: Project Nexus. Button mashing is more than welcomed in this third-person action-style game where you’ll take on hordes of enemies at a time. MADNESS: Project Nexus will be available on September 29 for PC via Steam. The game might also eventually make its way to consoles, depending on its success on Steam.

The Eternal Cylinder - September 30 (PC)

Looking for a game that’s a bit more… out there? Developer ACE Team has you covered with its title, The Eternal Cylinder. You’ll play as an evolvable race of snout-nosed creatures who have the ability to adapt to their environment in order to survive. However, impending doom is constantly lurking as the titular eternal cylinder – a literal never ending rolling pin – makes its way across the surface of the planet while you deal with strange and obscure-looking enemies. The Eternal Cylinder will be available on September 30 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store.

Aeon Drive - September 30 (PC, PS4, PS5, XB1, XBX, Switch)

Another release that focuses on speedrunning is Aeon Drive, from developer 2Awesome Studio. Play as Jackelyne, a dimension-hopping space ranger who crash lands in the suburbs of Neo Barcelona. Speedrun your way through 100 levels as you collect the drive cores needed to fix your ship. You’ll also be able to battle it out on the online leaderboards as you try to get the fastest time on each level. Aeon Drive will be available on September 30 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.

A few other indie games to check out includes a handful of titles that are in Early Access, or have already been released and are making their debut on other platforms:

  • Tiger Trio’s Tasty Travels (Port) - Available now for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam
  • Lords and Villeins (Early Access) - Available on September 30 for PC via Steam
