Various Disney-owned properties are now available as text-to-speech options on TikTok, celebrating Disney+ day. This allows you to make iconic characters such as C-3PO, Rocket, and Stitch say whatever you want - as long as you're not making them say something gay.

Indeed, as TikTok users are now discovering, these voiceovers are much more restricted than any other on the platform. While all of the Disney character voices ban obvious profanity, they will also refuse to say certain LGBTQ+ words, such as gay, lesbian and queer, making them the only voices to do so.

In our tests, we found that none of the voices will say gay, lesbian and queer, and will skip past it if any of them are included in your text. They will, however, say bisexual and trans, making the whole situation even more bizarre.

The most charitable reading of this is that the three words were accidentally picked up by a profanity filter, since certain personalities online like to use them as insults. However, using an algorithm that conflates sexualities with swearing and insults might just raise more concerns than it eases.

This is likely not the image Disney would like to publically portray. In the run-up to the premiere of Eternals, the company stressed that it would not be cutting LGBTQ+ content in order to secure a release in countries that prohibit it. This led to the film being pulled in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, but did earn the studio some goodwill among queer fans and allies, as there was no compromise for the sake of profit.

Despite this, the TikTok censorship is still unlikely to surprise many. Prior to Eternals, LGBTQ+ content in Disney films was reduced to small cameos, almost exclusively unnamed background characters - something that could be edited out of some international releases. This reportedly happened with both Avengers: Endgame and Onward's Russian releases, in which dialogue was changed to remove any implication of a character being in a queer relationship.
