Timesplitters 2 never quite reached the heights of GoldenEye 007, but it still managed to sell well enough on the PlayStation 2 to generate a cult following of devoted fans. Billed as perhaps the greatest split-screen deathmatch first-person-shooter of the era, Timesplitters 2 had players face off in up to 16-player local games provided they had enough TVs and PS2s to go around.

With all the remasters and remakes going around these days, those die-hard fans are clamoring for Timesplitters 2 to get the same treatment. And for a moment there, it really did seem like Timesplitters 2 was going to get it.

In THQ Nordic’s latest game, SpellForce 3: Fallen God, there are several in-game items that your nomadic tribe of trolls can grab which reference upcoming games from the publisher. One of them references BioMutant, the other the new Gothic remake, and a third the SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom’s remaster.

And then there’s a box that says “TimeSplitters 2 Remake.” We can see this box courtesy of YouTuber Beyond, and although they play the game in French, Google can helpfully translate the box’s description.

"It’s finally coming! The iconic shooter, which has stood the test of time to join the era of modern games."

For a second, we got our hopes up. Last year, THQ Nordic hired Timesplitters co-creator Steve Ellis to figure out what to do with the franchise and assist in development, but no further information was provided. That might mean there are inklings of a remake being made, but it might not. With this reference, it seemed about as good a confirmation as we were ever going to get.

Sadly, that's not the case. Speaking to Eurogamer, THQ Nordic confirmed that "this is just an innocent Easter egg" and that the particular vendor that sells the Timesplitters 2 Remake box isn't particularly known for "telling the truth."

On the other hand, Biomutant and Gothic Remake are definitely real and definitely still on their way, we just don't know when.
