MDL Chengdu, the first Dota 2 Major of the 2019-20 Dota Pro Circuit season, has officially gotten underway in Chengdu, China. The group stage sees sixteen teams divided into four groups, playing best-of-three matches to decide play-off seeding. The top teams from each group have been found as day one concludes.
Group A favorite TNC Predator has come out on top, having pushed past their opponents with 2-0 victories in both matches. Their opening game saw them take on Team Unknown, TNC easing past the Peruvian side in a quick series - neither game reaching the twenty-three minute mark. TNC Predator’s Kim "Gabbi" Villafuerte and Armel Paul "Armel" Tabios powered the squad to the win, later doing the same as the Filippino-majority squad faced EHOME. TNC secured their group’s top spot after another clean sweep victory.
Vici Gaming began their group stage run with a 2-1 win over the newly-signed Team Spirit in the opening match, Zhang "Eurus" Chengjun powering the Chinese squad to victory in game three. Vici then met Alliance in the winners’ match, Linus "Limmp" Blomdin pushing the European side to a game one win after 42 minutes. The Chinese side rallied back in the next two games, securing the 2-1 victory in two sub-thirty minute matches. Vici Gaming will join TNC Predator in the play-off upper bracket.
Group C would see prominent Dota 2 organizations Team Liquid and Evil Geniuses face off in the second round. Both squads won their opening matches, Liquid taking down Team Aster while Artour “Arteezy” Babaev powered EG to a win over Team Adroit. The two then met in the winners’ match, Evil Geniuses taking a game one victory after 36 minutes. Despite Arteezy’s best efforts, game two went the way of Team Liquid after a 52-minute brawl. The fight continued in game three, where Team Liquid came out on top to secure the group’s top seed.
DOTA Summit 11 champions Invictus Gaming kicked off the group stage with a 2-0 win over Peruvian squad beastcoast. The Chinese-Malaysian squad then took on North American side J.Storm in the winners’ match. Mid laner Zhou "Emo" Yi pushed his team to the win, as iG bested J.Storm in 2-0 fashion. With that, Invictus claimed Group D’s top spot and earned an upper bracket play-off berth.
